After the announcement of his participation at Wireless this year fans have been waiting on bated breathe to see whether or not Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd was going to play a solo show in the city or not. Thankfully prayers have been answered as the Toronto hailing enigma has just confirmed his debut show at Wiltons Music Hall on June 7th.

BluesFest is a 2 week long music festival spanning London and Manchester. The event, which takes place in various venues across both cities will see shows from the likes of George Benson, Ronnie Wood, Van Morrison, Charles Bradly, Brand New Heavies, Tom Jones and as just announced – Erykah Badu.

Badu who traditionally performs at Brixton Academy whenever she’s in London, will this time take to the stage at the Hammersmith Apollo on June 27th.

Monday night saw a world music double header at the Barbican. Buena Vista Social Club prodigy and Havana Cultura star Roberto Fonseca accompanied by full band, coupled with London’s own Ayanna Witter-Johnson as support, made for a truly complete evening. Read my review after the jump.

Ayanna was the first non-American to win the legendary ‘Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater’ in Harlem, playing tracks off the current truthfully EP, her unique and captivating voice was accompanied beautifully by the dextrous use of her cello, which doubled up as a percussive instrument and bass (which I haven’t seen done as well live since Raul Midon in the same space as part of the London Jazz Festival a few years back). Crowd favourites included her rendition of The Police’s ‘Roxanne’ and a touching dedication to her mother, ‘Unconditional’. A really promising set from Hornsey’s finest and with her EP being produced by Marc Mac (4Hero) it’s definitely worth keeping your eyes open for any upcoming projects.

The godfather of world music, Gilles Peterson, introduced the headline act. Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca delighted a packed Barbican with technical brilliance coupled with perfectly balanced instrumental battling between members of the band. Playing through the current yo album, Fonseca took us on a global musical journey through Cuba, Africa, Bulgaria and Morocco in a non-stop 2-hour set.

He admitted it had always been his ambition to make an album with strong African influence, enlisting the help of Baba Sissoko (n’goni) and Sekou Kouyate (kora) for both the longplayer and gig. Baba Sissoko was a focal point throughout the gig and the playful musical jousting and huge smiles between Roberto and himself were both entertaining and genius.

A rhythmically diverse evening, starting with fast paced album tracks with a more traditional (80’s) Latin pace, moving into passionate love songs (Asi es la vida) and those then a solid groove, switching styles effortlessly the sparing use of the vocoder was also appreciated.

The highlight of the night for me was the rendition of ‘Bibisa’, which saw vocalist and ‘queen of the night’ Fatoumata Diawara bought to the stage. A composition by Baba Sissoko, which saw Fonseca’s piano conversing with Diawara’s haunting and heavily reverbed voice. The duo of layered African strings creating a wholly atmospheric musical landscape.

The demonstration of superior musicianship sparring between genres, cultures and tastes ended the gig in a much-deserved standing ovation. A truly special evening for all who were present. You can get hold of Roberto’s wonderful yo here.

It’s been nearly 15 years since Lauryn Hill released her opus debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Since then we’ve been waiting (in agony) for that sophomore follow up. If our sources are to be believed (and they are), new official-album music is beginning to circulate – and it’s said to be sounding very, very good.

Fingers tightly crossed.

After a slew of questionable performances, Mrs Hill will return to London for the first time in 5 years on April 14th to perform a ‘one-off’ live show at the Indig02. Tickets will be on sale from Friday March 23th, at 9am via Live Nation and will be priced £38.50, £42.50, $47.50.

After a 4 year hiatus from touring the UK, Radiohead will return this October to play 3 dates at Manchester Arena (October 6th) and London’s O2 Arena (October 8th & 9th). Tickets go on sale March 9th at 9am – purchase here.

In an attempt to prevent secondary ticketing the band (known for their innovative distribution methods) are implementing a number of measures for ticket buyers. These include a paperless ticketing system, limiting the number of tickets allowed per transaction, disallowing name changes after purchase and most surprising – requiring a photo ID to gain entry to the shows. It’s pretty safe to assume tickets won’t be around for very long – assuming more dates will be added if so.

Deviation have announced a stellar line-up for their 50th session at Concrete this coming Wednesday (March 7th).

To celebrate the milestone anniversary they’ve invited the omnipotent Hudson Mohawke, along side Mercury Prize nominated DJ/artist/producer James Blake to spin exclusive sets. The night will mark Blake’s Deviation debut. They’ll both share DJ duties with resident Benji B who will be spinning for the remainder of the night alongside trusted mic keeper Judah.

On February 27th, Robert Glasper will release his awe-inspiring new album Black Radio into the world. The 12 track accomplished body of work will feature an array of sensation collaborations from the likes of Erykah Badu, Bilal, Mos Def, Musiq, Lalay Hathaway, Lupe Fiasco, Meshell Ndegeocello and more.

On May 14th, Glasper will being his Experiment to London, specifically to the Barbican, to celebrate his new LP. He will be joined by collaborator Bilal along with a host of other “special guests” – and if my sources hold true (which they will), the artists taking part will drop some jaws (and/or drawers).

Tickets are priced £10-£25 and are on sale now.

No need for such things if you’re lucky enough to live, work or visit London this month. There is a little something for everyone.
