I.AM.LIVID!

photo

These people are taking the piss now!

First “Drop Dead Fred” and now they’re remaking another one of my favourite 80’s movies. Like, what the fu*k, really? “Flight of the Navigator”, (my own copy pictured above) is one of my all time favourite child-hood movies. My family love to tell the story of how I used to watch it, rewind it to the beginning, and watch it all over again – all. day. long! I watched it like, 2 days ago! < Really.

…Why, why, WHY – do they need to remake it? Why does Hollywood persist on fu*king with (cult) classics? My goodness, is nothing sacred anymore? Why not just remake “The Goonies”, or hell, just completely kill “E.T”? What’s next? Huh? Huh? What, you gonna remake “Beetlejuice” now?

I did warn you. I. AM. LIVID!

Curses!

Please tell me I’m not alone here?

(No) Peace, (No) Love & LIVIDITY!

P.s I just realised, many of you might not even know about this film (shambles). If you don’t, you’ve been deprived of a childhood, seriously. Get some more info here.

P.p.s Also just read that they’re remaking the original “Buffy the Vampire Movie” – while I’m not too fussed about this, it yet again proves my point: Hollywood is taking the royal piss! I know there a millions of talented movie writers out there, why not invest in NEW films!? I know the economy is bad and all, but making a film, is making a film!

One of my Favourite Videos (Ever)…

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this video. Being 100% serious. Ya’ll know Prince is the highest of the highs in my book. Check him performing, acoustically, some of his biggest hits (including “Sometimes It Snows in April”**), aswell as covering Chaka Khan’s “Sweet Thing”…

…”Ain’t nobody better”. < F.A.C.T. Like, name me a cooler person? Haha!

No reason for posting this other than to…Sharing is caring.

Peace, Love & Prince

Classic Moment: Janet Jackson & Q-Tip – “‘Til It’s Gone” [LIVE]

Love this tune. Love this album. In my opinion The Velvet Rope still stands as Janet’s best work. Awesome performance.

Classic Moment: Alicia Keys – “Fallin’”

I got some history with this track. This album in fact. Alicia Keys’ debut Songs in A Minor still stands as one of my all time favourite soul albums. I know it’ll be one of those LP’s I’ll have and listen to forever. And, just like my parents look back at Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, I will do the same with this.

Amazingly “Fallin’” is just one great song on an even greater album. “Troubles”, “Rock Wit You”, “A Woman’s Worth”, “The Life” & “Mr Man” are all incredible Soul songs and reflect, in my opinion, some of Alicia’s best work.

To debut with this though, man that’s just remarkable. Most artists don’t get this type of song in an entire career. It still stands as one of my favourite tracks, hence why it’s getting the ‘Classic Moment’ treatment. If you haven’t heard/watched it in a while, stop what you’re doing and just press play.

Such a bad ass tune. Lol. I know that’s not the right way to describe this tune, but really – it’s bad ass. It’s funny, I brought Songs in A Minor from Our Price (who remembers Our Price????) and when purchasing it, I knew NOTHING about her. I didn’t even know “Fallin’”. I just saw her, her piano and the fact that it was executively produced by Clive Davis – handed over my £15.99 (yup, £15.99!) and never looked back.

…I kinda miss them days.

Classic Moment: K-Os – “Man I Used To Be” [VIDEO]

It’s a sad fact, but the masses are still fast asleep when it comes to K-Os and his brilliance…

“Man I Used To Be” is just one of many tracks K-Os has produced that need your undivided attention. I’m not joking, his albums Exit & Joyful Rebellion are packed to the brim with pure class. I’m so confused to why not that many people know or reference him more. Well, I guess that’s why we’re here. If you haven’t checked K-Os out before, make sure you do now via his myspace. He’s got a new project on the way too.

Classic Moments: Dawn Robinson – “Envious”

*I know, two in two days, but this was just inspired*

Be 100, hands up how many of you knew that Dawn Robinson released a solo single? This solo single? Hmmm! Well, for those who don’t know Robinson released this joint called “Envious” and a rather hot, bondage inspired video…

Lemme tell you, I brought this single on import, ‘member those? Yes, I paid something stupid like £8.99 coz it was imported from the US. ONE TRACK? Ok, it was more like 4 with the remixes but damn, how dumb was I? Haha! I say, I do love me some Dawn  Robinson and with the re-emergence of En Vogue, my love for this lady has been reignited. Her voice is overly serious – can’t be denied. But yea, thought I’d share this up as I don’t think many folks are aware of it?!

Peace, Love & Dawn will you marry me Robinson

Classic Moments: Unkle – “Rabbit In Your Headlights”

This is one of my favourite Unkle tracks, and generally one of my favourite music videos full stop.

Random fact: I did a whole essay on that video. Yessir. ‘Tis big. Even if this isn’t necessarily you’re kinda thing, you gotta love the creativity.

Classic Moment: Whitney Houston – “A Song For You” [Live]

Before the crack…

Ain’t never heard anything like that in my life. “A Song For You” is easily one of the best songs ever written and while no one can touch Hathaway’s original, this is most certainly close and not to mention the best rendition I have ever heard. My God. I just hope, by some miracle, Houston can return to her former glory. We’ll have to wait and see.

P.s 1991: A more simpler time when a singer could buss a green all in one. Bad gyal. Lol.

Classic Moment: The Jackson 5 – “Who’s Lovin’ You”

Played this today randomly and every time I hear it I always think: ‘how can such a lil’ kid have so much soul?’. This most definitely is a classic moment…

…Talk about blast from the past! Cleopatra? You takin’ the piss? I would be the phattest liar going if I said I didn’t buy this single (*cough* and album). I admit to the shame, but sh*t this was 10 years ago? How old am I feelin’ right now? We were all kids once haha!

The girls took part in one of those ‘makeover’ shows, which resulted in this final performance/reveal and I gotta say, they’re looking real good! Gone are the baggy dungarees and big t-shirts! Cleopatra are said to be about to make a big ‘comeback’ – not entirely how big of a comeback you can have after only releasing one album – but, eh, let’s see how that pans out.

Classic Moment: India.Arie – “Ready for Love”

I kid you not, one of my favorite songs of all times…

India.Arie’s debut album still stands, to me, as one of the best (neo)soul albums in my collection. It’s beautiful, it’s real, it’s soulful, it’s honest and just brilliant to listen to. This song however, this song is off the chains incredible. Amazingly written, amazingly composed and amazingly sang. Songs like these aren’t written everyday, thats for sure. “Ready for Love” is without a doubt Arie’s best song to date, I’m not exactly sure how you top it? Either way, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Classic Moment: Screamin Jay Hawkins – “I Put a Spell On You”

True story: Jay Electronica sent me this video…

Dope right? Weird, strange and crazy, but dope nonetheless! Had never seen this video previously, pretty intriguing.

Classic Moment: “Little Monsters” [MOVIE]

Tell me someone remembers this movie? Just chatting about old skool movies you used to watch as a kid and got onto the subject of “Beetle Juice” (claaaaasic) and I remembered a m0vie I watched Y-E-A-R-S ago on the Disney channel (I think, but probably not as it’s not a Disney film?) about a kid who finds this next monster world under his bed. After a quick google search (the subject of our next conversation: what the f*ck did we do before the Internet?) I discovered it was called “Little Monsters” and had that very annoying kid from “Wonder Years” in it.

My only recollection of this film was when I watched it as a kid, haven’t seen it since then so have NO idea what it’s like, but all I know as a kid – I.LOVE.IT! I beg someone else knows about this film! If you do, drop it in the comment section init!

P.s Just thought a whole bunch of other (similar) movies, watch this space. 1980’s movies were the one!

Classic Moment: Amy Winehouse – “F*ck Me Pumps”

It’s a slow news day today, so I thought I’d share with you what I’m listening to today…

While the rest of the world slept and before the crack, tattoos, controversy, Back to Black and the Grammy’s, Amy Winehouse was an artist many of us music heads in London fell in love with. Her first album Frank remains as good today as when I first brought it (ironically in Camden/Kentish Town (college days init))…

While Back to Black gave Winehouse (now Wino) worldwide recognition, Frank gave her a cult following. When I first heard her debut, to say I was blown away is an understatement – in fact, I clearly remember making everyone I knew buy it after I did. Her honesty, her vulnerability, and her abilty to connect with listeners by being totally ‘frank’ through her music was both exciting and refreshing. The way she mixed Jazz and Hip Hop was crazy and her voice! Her voice is mental on this record! It was a brilliant debut and while it didnt’ hot up the charts, it did earn her a lot of critical acclaim…

I used to go college in Hampsted (those who know, know) and used to see Amy around town quite a bit (I particularly remember bumping into her in our ‘local’ pool house where a conversation about Nas Vs Jay-Z erupted into a fun debate between everyone – she was defending Nas). Anyways, this is just one of many brilliant tracks off Frank which as I said I was listening to today, so thought I’d share it with ya’ll…

Mad right, you can’t help but ask “what the hell went wrong”? A totally different person to the Amy Winehouse the world knows now init? Shame really. But on a level, if you don’t have Amy’s debut, I implore you to go buy it – infact, I say bootleg it – that chick don’t need any more drug money.

Classic Moment…

Wow. It’s been a minute (or two) since I last posted up a Classic Moment! In case you’ve forgotten or don’t know, Classic Moments can be anything that defines a time, represents a moment in history or pop culture or anything that is simply significant to me (and/or the crew dem).

Today’s Classic Moment goes to Mr. Otis Redding.

Damn. What a performance!! I mean, not that it’s new to me or anything, but this dude was the man back in the day! His tunes (which are currently playing on my iTunes as I type) are classic. From the obvious “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” and the above “Try a Little Tenderness” to the more unknown tracks like “Day Trippin” and “Groovin’ Time”. His voice is so soulful! Man, the 1960’s was an incredible time for soul music.

Classic Moments…

We haven’t posted a ‘Classic Moment’ in a minute here at PinBoard and so I thought I’d pop one up now.

I was listening to Mobb Deep last night and remembered how much I used to rinse “Infamous” and “Hell On Earth” back in the day. I still go back to those albums on a regular, but when I tell you I used to listen to each album front to back, pretty much everyday – I ain’t exaggerating!

In light of this memory, today’s ‘Classic Moment’ comes from Mobb Deep’s 1995 “Infamous” album. Enjoy!

Truly, Classic Hip Hop.

Peace, Love & Mobb Deep

Spotlight: Lauryn Hill – “The Miseducation of Lauren Hill”

Yesterday [August 25th 2008] marked the 10 year anniversary of one of the greatest albums ever made. Lauryn Hill stunned the world with her remarkably perfect solo debut “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”. The ground breaking, five time Grammy award winning album has become one of the most adored LP’s in Hip Hop/Soul.

In one album, Lauryn Hill accomplished what most artists fail to do in an entire career. She produced an album that history will remember, an album that people will pass down for generations. Hill displayed her artistry with such precision, even today I discover new things I hadn’t previously heard – be it an instrument I had missed or a lyric that I didn’t realise.

She sings better than most singers, raps better than most rappers and writes better than most song writers. This concept album not only set new precedence for female hip-hop artists but artists in general. The albums title references Carter G. Woodsons book The Mis-Education of the Negro and the album’s cover pays homage to The Wailers historic “Burnin’” album – references that again, displayed the genius of Lauryn Hill.

The flawless blend of Hip Hop, Soul, R&B along with the creation of the Neo-Soul movement and her mastery for integrating new and old made for a truly historic and landmark album. The 16 track deep LP takes you on an educational ride through reality, spiritually, life, love and loss. You are offered a unique insight into the world of Lauryn Hill.

I can’t list in order my favourite albums, but if I had to compile a list (in no order) it would have to include“Songs in the Key of Life”, “Purple Rain”, “Off The Wall”, “Illmatic”,  and most certainly “The Miseducation of Lauryn HIll”

Songs like “To Zion”, “Superstar”, “When It Hurts So Bad”, “Final Hour”, “Nothing Even Matters” and of course “Ex Factor”, “Everything is Everything” and “Doo Wop” are easily some of the best songs ever written and recorded. And of course, those sweet, innocent and insigntful class room interludes! Again, genius.

We all know how the Lauryn Hill story ends. No follow up, crazy reports about her personal life and state of mind etc. And while many wait for a comeback album, I am not among them. I think when you create an album like “The Miseducation…” it is impossible to live up to it. I honestly believe the memory of Lauryn Hill should be of this album and not of some disappointing follow up. How can you ever produce a better album? Just as Michael Jackson could never top “Thriller”? , the same is of Lauryn Hill and this album. But unlike Michael Jackson, we have no bad examples to compare “The Miseducation…” to and while many may say that’s sh*t, I think it’s the best thing.

Of course, Hill did record an MTV Unplugged album back in 2001, which many were very excited about, but then disapointed when it aired and we all realised she wasn’t doing any ‘classic Lauryn’. However, I gotta say, after revisiting that album a few years later, I realised how truly beautiful, albeit tragic, it was.

Despite her personal state of mind, Lauryn Hill will go down in history just as she should. As a talented artist who produced one of the greatest albums of all time. I am thankful I was around when this album was released and am able to remember (clearly) the very first time I heard it (10 years ago yesterday!). I still reference this album on a regular. I still go back and relish in it’s wonder. Doper than dope, higher than high, this album is historic. Like many others, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” will be an album that I will pass down…

…I still can’t believe it’s been 10 years though!

Peace, Love & Lauryn Hill
