Dominic Stanton a.k.a Domu hung up his music boots a couple of years ago now which was devastating news to all broken beat/future boogie and good music fans. Going by the names of Sonar Circle, Umod and Bakura amongst others he built up a huge library of dope unreleased goodies that never got an airing. Domu was part of a collective called Yotoko which also included Mr Shifty who is thankfully ( with permission of course) putting out these 90 unreleased demos and rarities for your listening pleasure. I need another holiday so I can get through them all! Enjoy people!

Bonobo’s Black Sands album was one of the best of 2010 – to celebrate it’s success the band are releasing a remix LP on February 21st featuring some of the most exciting producers around. Floating Points, Falty DL, Cosmin TRG, Machine Drum among others have been enlisted to rework the albums tracks.

To get things cracking they’ve made Machine Drum’s remix of ‘Eyesdown’ available for free download – listen below and grab here. Preview 3 other remixes via their website also.

Just two days old and Beyonce & Jay-Z’s baby is already a bigger star than your favourite superstar. Unable to contain his excitement new father Jigga unearths a track dedicated to his daughter entitled ‘Glory’, which incidentally features B.I.C aka Blue Ivy Carter herself and is produced by The Neptunes.

… It’s a happy occasion, so I’ll save my cynical commentary for another time, press play and see what you make of this. Jay over soulful beats never goes wrong.

The 3 million dollar boy drops off “some new wave to start the year off right” in the form of ‘Pretty Flacko’. Produced by SpaceGhostPurrp, this serves as a reminder that musically speaking A$AP remains unconstrained and unboxed. Expect that A$AP Mob album in February.

With very little warning, a new free album has emerged from Hackney songstress Anita Blay otherwise known as Cocknbullkid. The project, made up of old songs and demos, was supposed to be released “properly” but according to Blay the label was slow to put it out and “someone beat them to it” – wonder who that was?

Electro-pop, synth heavy anthemics, seductive vocals, 80′s cool – enjoy.

Someone really ought to check the water supply in Toronto, something very strange has been happening over there. It would appear that T.Dot is in the midst of an artistic uprising – at least when concerned with developments in R&B.

The Weeknd / XO affiliated DropxLife (co-producer of ‘Initiation’ from Echoes of Silence) is a seemingly mysterious creative whose existence is primarily felt through the songs he chooses to upload online (a familiar XO model). Very little is known or can be found on him – a mixtape ALLXLEGENDS and album Pawncho have flown about before this new 3-tracker which dropped today.

While we acclimatise ourselves to the seemingly endless inventory of faceless producers, our ears are forced to balance the precipice – a task made much easier when such expansive experimentalism is done so vividly. DropxLife’s productions are lasciviously dark, merging the beauty of obscure R&B with 2-step idiosyncrasies and empyreal mysticism. Lo-fi thick basslines, dank drum patterns and enough rotundness to wet the most sapless of minds.

This is deep. ‘NuerxOld’ is on repeat especially.

The R&B rebirth continues. Up now is Phlo Finister, a Cali-based singer currently making a name for herself with her brand of contemporary-throwback R&B.

Finister’s recently released FreEP entitled Crown Gold is a 6 track project featuring known productions from the likes of Dr. Dre, Tupac & The Doors, plus two original compositions from Jay Curry. Clearly affected by the traditions of 90′s R&B and the trademarks of artists like Aaliyah, Brandy and Ashanti – she aims to produce “classic R&B” with a “avant garde” edge. Phlo does possess a clear patent voice well suited to the style of R&B she’s producing and despite some of it’s languor, the EP does offer some promising insight – most discernibly on songs like ‘Shades’ & ‘No More’.

Critical to any artists’ success though is their ability to embody the influences of their formative years whilst amalgamating them with the modern. Fail to do so and you run the risk of boring your audience, or worse – pissing them off entirely. Pretty confident her video for ‘Shades’ for instance will raise a few eyebrows – Finisher’s “I fuck with Tommy Hilfiger, simple as that” approach may not go down too well with the die-hard traditionalists. But with a pinch more distinction, tighter productions and stronger focus on “avante garde” methods – Phlo Finister should be an interesting one to watch.

British electronic musician Synkro recently moved us with his refix of The XX’s ‘Night Time’ – that 2-Step revision was a refreshing approach to an already compelling record. A couple days ago he took to his soundcloud to unleash “one of [his] tunes from a few years back that never saw a release” entitled ‘Last Night’. It’s an ambient, nocturnally suited production armed with dreamy synths and a hypnotic pulse. Recognise that sample? Available for free download below.

Our boy Star Slinger gets his teeth stuck into Rihanna’s biggest single to date. The remix don transforms Rih-Rih’s Euro-Pop megahit ‘We Found Love’ into something a little dirtier – basslines, drum patterns, chopped up vocals – he swags it out.

Some brilliant news in the early hours – Clams Casino leaked his critically lauded Instrumentals fully mastered, 360kbps, all thirteen tracks in a nice zippy, via ye ole’ twitter.

Released online earlier this year by the producer himself, it was a crossover Ambient Hip-Hop success putting indie-sphere on it’s batty. If you dork on deets like this – some of the charm was in the heavily compressed, DIY origins of these works, but that doesn’t stop the more atmospheric, tropic thunder material sounding gutsy and grand in these final mixes.

The 24-year old North Jersey wonder has us also waiting for a Lana Del Ray remix and more collaborative craftsmanship with another of the year’s crossover successes, A$AP Rocky.

An unfathomable all-star cast has been scooped by Pop star Ke$ha for the remix of ‘Sleazy Remix 2.0 Get Sleazier’ – consisting of Lil’ Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, T.I & André 3000. Pause.

… Unfortunately the worse thing about this song is Ke$ha’s part. That said, a respectable (and extremely clever) hustle must be noted – this line up is ridiculous. She got 3 Stacks on her record?

It’s been a minute since Mar dropped new music, he’s currently busy working on his debut album as well as new project with Full Crate. But tonight he returns with another ‘variation’ – a series which sees him covering/rearranging a diverse array of songs.

Having already tackled songs by Wham, Dorian Concept, Oddisee, Louis Bordeaux and Lil’ Wayne – he’s now worked his musings over Apex Twin’s ‘Avril 14th’ (recently sampled by Kanye West on ‘Blame Game’). Featuring London songbird Szjerdene, the pair sing over an accompanying video depicting a couple having to deal with an difficult and emotional situation.

Shlohmo takes it somewhere else entirely with this remix. Contorting DJ Khaled’s #crewlove anthem ‘I’m On One’ and deconstructing it into something compellingly left is a real insight into the mind of this obscure producer. For some it may be a little difficult to digest on a Monday morning, but later when the sun fades – this should be your soundtrack (for a few puffs at least). Listen & download below…

Lupe’s debut Food & Liquor featured a politically charged song called ‘American Terrorist’ – like most of his work on that LP it displayed Fiasco’s vernacular adeptness. Last night the Chi-Town native took to his twitter to unleash part III of that song (not entirely sure what happened to part II, but we continue) which like it’s predecessor is aimed at the social landscape of his/our environment.

Fiasco’s ability to effectively deliver intellectualised messages while staying relatable/digestible to a mainstream audience has always been worth admiring. And despite the pitfalls of his last long player, this proves he still has the passion and prowess to deliver good, thought provoking material.

… And lyrical content aside for a moment, it’s the Kavinsky ‘Nightcall’ instrumental borrowed that unashamedly earns him a full gunfinger salute – the brooding, swaggerific, 80′s themed song is taken off one of this year’s best motion pictures, “Drive” (starring man-crush Ryan Gosling).

Do grab that “Drive” OST, instant cult classic.

Something new from emerging R&B songstress Jhené Aiko in the form of ‘In Love We Trust’, taken off her forthcoming LP Souled Out. The track like most of Aiko’s works has dope production, but lacks in that melodic execution that you want (need) from an R&B singer. Still falling into that Cassie 2.0 territory.
