Earlier this year Låpsley mesmerised us with her brilliant debut singles ‘Station‘, and more recently ‘Painter (Valentine)‘, but today the eighteen year-old Liverpudlian returns with her strongest effort yet. ‘Falling Short’, premiered by Annie Mac last night on Radio 1, is formed by a simple piano motif which runs through the track allowing Låpsley’s powerful vocals to enchant.
Whilst she hid her voice behind the floaty instrumentation in her previous singles, you can really hear the clarity in her voice on this new one. It shows a great deal of growth and maturity on her part; something that can only help in the future, because let’s face it, she’s going to be huge!
Over the past six months, south Londoner TALA has had everyone under her spell with some introspective, multicultural (by way of Iran) electronica. So, why mention her now? To be frank I didn’t really get the hype, it all felt a little noisy to me.
But it’s with new single ‘Alchemy’ where things change. It’s by far her most interesting track to date, and by far, her best. Her hazy vocals, reminiscent of BANKS, ignites a moody atmosphere as the scattered beat (produced by TALA herself) brings it all together. The single is taken from her forthcoming Alchemy EP which is out 17th November via Aesop. Whilst you’re at it, give the rest of her music a listen over at her Soundcloud.
Dornik channels his inner MJ on new number ‘Second Thoughts’, the b-side to his latest single ‘On My Mind‘. This new one pretty mellow and laid-back, perfect for Dornik to absolutely nail those high notes as the breezy soundscape brings the track forwards. Give it a spin…
Almost exactly two months ago, SBTRKT perfectly set the tone to his new album with ‘NEW DORP. NEW YORK‘ which features vocals from Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig. Today the illustrious producer has shared a rather dark and creepy, animated music video which features a panther/lizard-type creature making its way around streets, cars and mist before coming to a rest on a metallic, open arm to recreate the album’s artwork. Check out the visual above, and look out for Wonder Where We Land when it drops next Monday!
French/Cuban sister duo Ibeyi share the studio version of ‘Mama Says’, the song which kick-started their XL journey from earlier this year, following a spellbinding live performance of the aforementioned track last year. ‘Mama Says’ sees the twins slow things down as a soft piano melody is the backbone for the sisters to deliver some stunning vocals.
Introducing London based singer and producer Sakima, and his brilliant debut single ‘Energy’. His deep and endearing vocal seamlessly transitions between the woozy soundscape consisting of powerful percussive inflections and speedy handclaps. ‘Energy’ finds Sakima marrying the introspective electronics of James Blake with SOHN’s empowering vocal depth whilst entailing his own distinct style. Spin the track above, and give its reworking a listen too.
Having produced for the likes of FKA twigs and Kanye West in the past year, electronic artist and producer Arca has announced the release of his debut album, Xen, out November 3rd via Mute Records. ‘Thievery’ is the first track to surface from the record, and from the get go sees the Venezuelan producer continue to push boundaries. The striking artwork (above) was designed by long time collaborator Jesse Kanda, the magician behind LP1’s stunning cover. Xen, will be available in a number of formats, including a special hand-numbered bundle which’ll include a bonus 10″ record of exclusive Arca material as well as a copy of his exceptional &&&&& mixtape; all sealed in black PVC.
Stream ‘Thievery’ below and check out the full tracklisting for Xen after the jump/
BOOTS has been on a break since releasing his brilliant WinterSpringSummerFall mixtape earlier this summer, but the silence is broken with new number ‘Mercy’. As with previous releases, BOOTS continues to embark on new pastures as he exposes his raw vocal over a soft piano melody before things gradually intensify as strong, electric guitars are joined by thudding drums around the three-minute mark.
SBTRKT follows up the Ezra Koenig featuring ‘New Dorp. New York‘ with another stellar collaboration; this time, teaming up with Atlanta based wonderkid Raury on ‘Higher’. The track begins with an eerie atmosphere before the bass kicks in and Raury pounces with a killer and uber catchy chorus. Wonder Where We Land, SBTRKT’s sophomore offering is out September 22, for now though, stream ‘Higher’ above.
Having announced the release of You’re Dead last month, Flying Lotus has shared the first cut ‘Never Catch Me’ which features Kendrick Lamar. FlyLo packs quite a punch with the frenzied beat for Lamar to add his super fiery flow on to as a gentle piano-led melody underlines and brings the track together. These two were made for each other; collaborative project anyone? We’re in.
