Londoners – we have been spoilt. Let’s admit it, we’ve had some heavy hitters and some huge festivals recently and I for one am becoming all too accustomed to sporting wellies in the middle of summer and being among 60,000 people. (I blame Wireless.) With the Olympics to look forward to this month and the city buzzing, let’s mix it up and support some top class talent. Be it Cold Specks or Jessie Ware at the open air venue of Somerset House, or Kwesachu or Lianne La Havas at Village Underground, check out something fresh this month.
tUnE-yArDs recruit a legion of children for their latest visual for ‘My Country’. As fun as it looks, the band who remains eclectic in music also stay true to a cause. This clip is to raise awareness for funds for students from Brightworks and the San Francisco Rock Project, which is a non-profit music school. To donate and find out more click here.
I love this chick. When it comes to originality, unique character and individualism, tUnE-yArDs is swimming in it. She performs for the first time on TV (I can’t believe this has not happened earlier) on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show, alongside the legendary Roots band. Even Black Thought comes on for a guest rap on ‘Gangsta’
I’m a few days late into June, but you haven’t missed that much. Festival season is upon us and Queen Bey is making her debut at Glastonbury this month, the leftfield Spanish gathering, Sonar is set to be another great festival and theres loads else where throughout the country. Back to the capital, London is visited by Big Boi, Alicia Keys and tUnE-YarDs this month. Hit the jump and get into this months offerings.
I can’t front…this is the first time I have come across Merrill Garbus (slacking… I know…I know). She is the mastermind behind the world beat/jam-pop entity tUnE-yArDs. This is a dope interview/live track combo which is nicely shot and I was blown away by her versatile vocal ability. The fact that she murks it with, wait for it…the ukulele = mad props. I can’t wait to go cop more of her ish right now. Shout to the Yours Truly collective who have been putting out this dope series. Check more out here
Just spotted this over at Soulbounce and was… Intrigued. It took me a couple listens to really digest this one, I still don’t think I have a concrete opinion on it though. In some ways, I like it. In others, I don’t think I do.
‘Bizness’ comes off tUnE-yArDs’ (aka Merrill Garbus) new album WHOKILL which drops April 18th.
