There are contrasting rumours floating around as to why Drake didn’t sign The Weeknd to his OVOSound imprint, but whatever the reasons may be it makes perfect sense for him to fill that void with someone like PARTYNEXTDOOR. Comparisons are often lazy and unnecessary but ignoring this one would be a little naive. Stylistic comparisons aside when you compare PARTYNEXTDOOR’s voice with Abel’s, it’s uncanny. In fact, in parts, it’s pretty difficult to hear much difference.
That said Canada’s latest export yesterday released his self-titled debut mixtape with 10 new songs (including the previously released ‘Wus Good / Curious‘) featuring production from Noah ’40’ Shebib and an appearance from label boss Drizzy. In contrast to The Weeknd, PARTYNEXTDOOR incorporates a heavier hip hop influence into his material (think Future) and it’s the production on his tape that is particularly impressive.
