‘Wavvy’ is the unforgiving homage to debauchery courtesy of 25 year old Michael Quattlebaum, commonly known now as Mykki Blanco. Appearing in and out of drag, the video follows Blanco scoring drugs, running from the cops and taking centre stage (wig and mic in tow) at a sordid masquerade sex-party. More importantly though, the Francesco Carrozzin directed clip challenges the transgender label he’s become famous for; As one of the more poignant leaders of ‘Queer rap’, Blanco denounces conformity and instead decides to embrace all sides of his identify.
Rising producer Brenmar utterly destroys on this beat, definitely set those subs all the way to ig’nant. But it’s Mykki’s flow and hook that help bridge the gap between complete ratchet and accessibility here – I think this song has a lot of potential to open up his audience.
