Following an emotional tribute ‘For My Brother’ released a couple weeks ago in light of her 26-year old brothers untimely passing, another of the alterna-R&B brat packers who’ve shown their crossover potential for the last year and a half has been Def Jam signed Jhené Aiko. She finally lets go of the highly anticipated jump off video/single ’3:16AM’ and it doesn’t deflate the emotive gravitas Aiko has slowly built her reputation on, with often the chilliest melodies that dawdle on the beat like some lost spirit. “Out of place, out of space and time/ Wide awake, out of papers/ I am not OK/ I am out my mind/ Outerspace, that’s where I’ve been going…”
Amping up the twinkly, gothic elements to her oft spectral soundscapes, she collaborates again with Fisticuffs who’s brilliant work with another renegade Miguel oft seems him piloting an avant-garde twist on commercial nuances. He keeps ’3:16′ dark, cold and yet somehow still radio-applicable whilst the video imagines Jhené battling her witching hour visions.
Like many of you, we’re waiting on that major label debut Souled Out which is rumoured to be coming later this year.
