VIDEO: Le1f – Wut

Following the release of his debut mixtape Dark York, Brookyln emcee Le1f drops a new video (his first) for his single ‘Wut’. Produced by 5kinAndBone5, the track takes no prisoners; Approached with cut-throat precision Le1f’s powerful baritone flow and fierce wit outstands even this monstrous beat. Needing very little else to up the ante, Le1f’s performance in the video is ummissable.

As the taboo of sexuality in black music slowly defrosts with the emergence of openly LGBT artists like Mykki Blanco, Syd the Kid (The Internet), Zebra Katz, Frank Ocean and Le1f – it remains necessary to continue conversations (and to make cultural observations) about the growing scene. And in a recent interview with Pitchfork Le1f addressed his position on the influx of “queer rap” in New York, saying: ”Let’s not make gay NYC rap a ‘thing’… I’m not trying to be competing with my friends based on their race and sexuality. The whole ‘room for one’ mentality is homophobic... If the world is ready for a gay rapper, then they’re ready for multiple gay rappers. If we were straight, no one would be comparing us”.
