First week of 2012 and the online axis of musical ballyhoo has already spazzed out over some fruity looper going under the the cheeky moniker of Evian Christ. Subliminally the name’s gold no doubt, I mean, ‘Live Young’ branded water reference for the Peter Pan twentysomething sect and a pinch of heresy to tickle the freethinkers in all us music pundits. Bzzzz. There’s YouTube demos with We’re New Here style artwork, concealed identity, obscure indie act sampling, etc.?! Bzzzzzzz.

Running the cynic’s comb through it all… The productions are decent, minimal, ambient pad-heavy sustained minor chords peppered with skittering library standard 808 drum percs. The tonal moroseness is belied by the creeping club element to them weather you’re hearing influences of Juke or Cloud Rap characteristics, which is cool. Mix downs are variably lo-fi (tick), reverb plug-in seems to have been handy (tick). The chopped acapella choices are pretty complacent, nothing to write home about there, though I imagine combining cerebral textures with ghetto fab’ness is a real nut buster. Overall, the material does have some hypnotic qualities and is a crisp sum of it’s parts, weather combining the bi-polar nightbus music of the last five years or whatever was trending last year.

Doesn’t usher in a second coming jut yet, there’s alot of inventive producers out there making perhaps potenter stuff (Sepalcure, Pearson Sound amongst them). But enjoy the selected cut above which I find immersive, and we’ll keep you posted.

Grumble grumble.
