At the risk of sounding pretentiously detached – Jill Scott’s The Light of the Sun was the first album of hers that I wasn’t able to connect with or feel her heart and soul through. Whether it had something to do with the way she left her last label, or something to do with her new record company, or whether she was going through something artistically or even personally at the time, for whatever reason – this album felt empty to me.
… And I feel the same about this new single and video.
Jilly looks beautiful and her voice is still as gorgeous as ever – no ones taking that away from her. But this song doesn’t give me anything new and offers no… ‘grit’ (for lack of a better word). I guess what I look for (in all artists) is artistic evolution and that’s something I unfortunately failed to see this time round.
