After undoubtedly one of my favourite albums of 2010, Black Keys are back with more of their unique flavouring of bluesy rock soul and have announced a new album due by the end of this year.
Entitled El Camino, the duo announced their forthcoming release via a spoof car advert which you can watch over the jump, as well as get a peep of the tracklist. Album is out 6th December worldwide on Nonesuch Records and said to be produced not only by the pair themselves, but also Dangermouse. I for one am looking forward to how they will follow up the great success of Brothers.
Coming out of the Pictures music camp is a limited run of 300 slabs of the finest plastic containing a series of bubblers from one of my favourite steppers. From the latest “What’s There” project due out in November comes this latest track from Dauwd containing some real beautiful vocal stabs and a dirty baseline just for musical juxtaposition that you really need to get the big speakers out for. Late night bubbling vibes for sure. Just lovely! Dauwd is playing a show with Rudi Zygadlo who I featured here on the 20th October at the Macbeth, make sure you get yourself down there…
It’s been a minute since I have posted up some fresh content for y’all. Since having a break, a well needed holiday and a catch up on what the PB team have been sharing with you, I’m ready to jump back in the game.
I introduce to you Lianne La Havas. I had seen her name floating around on my timeline for a few months and as a true music stalker would…Sorry I mean blogger, I proceeded to follow her on twitter. Months later, the Warner signed fresher announces her two brand new EP releases.
Gratuitously, the young Londoner offers up a 4 track live EP for free and on first listen, the beautifully sung melodies, entrenched in vulnerable depth filled lyrics would capture most ears. Her style can easily be categorized next to the Andreya Triana’s of this world or a lazy comparison to Corinne Bailey Rae I’m sure will crop up in future when the mass media finally catch on. Personally, I believe she has definitely set herself apart from competitors, especially on my fav ‘Forget’. With a determined nod toward soul, there is no doubting her ability and conviction. I look forward to hearing more in the new year.
Be sure to download the freebie, as well as the Lost and Found EP on iTunes.
Our girl Azealia is making her London debut at Hoxton Sq Bar & Grill on November 6th. We first told you about this talented young femcee from New York when we posted her ’212′ (the video for which has been taken down due to a copywrite claim), we followed that up with her (bad ass) collaboration with Lunice on a track called ‘Runnin’.
… And we told you to keep a close eye on here – with good reason too. I think this young has a lot of potential at becoming a successful recording artist. Not only because there is (still) a massive gap in the market (despite what the mainstream media would suggest – one successful female emcee is not enough – remember the 90′s?) but because she’s also got a killer flow and a seemingly firm grasp on ‘what’s hot’.
Think we’re about ready for some new Jay Electronica, right?
Here’s his promised new single ‘Call of Duty: MW3′ featuring The Infamous. He may be taking his sweet time, but it’s got to be said – when Jay Elec drops something – it’s not only a mini-event, it also rarely disappoints.
Am I dreaming? Is this #soemoshswag heaven? Winter is definitely upon us. Reclusives, stand up.
Arguably one of the most influential groups in Trip-Hop have teamed up with arguably one of the most influential heads in 2-step to collaborate on what is arguably the most orgasm inducing two-track single of the year – entitled ‘Four Walls’ / ‘Paradise Circus’. Both singles (officially “remixes”) weigh in at around 12 minutes long and will be available exclusively as limited edition vinyl (only 1000 copies worldwide) on October 10th via vfesitions.com. The vinyl’s will be hand-numbered and encased in gold glitter screen-printed sleeves (designed by Massive Attack).
Brand new tune and video from Jamie XX. The video for ‘Progress’ is the result of Jamie collaborating with Quayola who used graphic visuals to interpret the bass-heavy track. Their collective work was showcased in London a few weeks back using two 15 metre HD screens – where a “live sound visualisation” of Jamie XX’s set was created. [via skoa]
Exciting news from one of my favourite producers – Onra, who has announced that he’ll be releasing a second installment of his critically acclaimed, and much loved Chinoiseries LP. Like the first, the instrumentals will only use source material found in China & Vietnam. The project is due to be released on November 15th on All City. [via xlr8r]
After the jump peep the albums tracklist, along with a video of Onra hunting for records in China.
While the mainstream media and top 40 enthusiasts continue to patronise #teamuk, there are other very active and very promising musicians in this country steadily building, and perfecting their craft in creating genuine and meaningful music – a shining example of this is Michael Kiwanuka.
We first featured 23-year-old Kiwanuka back in April when he released ‘Tell Me a Tale’, a song which came off an EP of the same name. The song won us over instantly – the deep 70′s Soul influence, the lush instrumentation (reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield’s Pusher Man period) and Michael’s glorious voice was more than enough to peak our interest. Then in August he released (and we posted) ‘I’m Getting Ready’ the title track off his latest EP. It was this song that confidently solidified our initial thoughts – that this young man was very special.
I’m Getting Ready was released as an EP over the summer – it truly is a radiant piece of work. Rich influences spanning Blues, Folk, Soul, Jazz and deep-south Gospel; If this is to serve as a preview for what is to come from Michael Kiwanuka – then I for one am inordinately excited for his future.
The Weeknd just dropped off a new track via his tumblr, you want in?
It’s unclear whether or not ‘Initiation’ is off Tesfaye’s forthcoming Echoes of Silence mixtape – whether it is or not – I’m not mad. Like most things this guy is putting out – this track right here is next. The pulsing dark’n'sexy beat, the screwed vocals – yessai. The Weeknd once again proving he is at the forefront of current tide of nu-R&B.
I feel deeply in love with Szjerdene’s single ‘Leila’s Tale’ when we first dropped it in August – so upon receiving an email from the lady herself with it’s accompanying video attached, I got a little excited.
And excited I should be, not only is this song a strong representation of the direction Szjerdene is heading in (I wish I could tell you about the stuff I’ve heard, but alas – my word is bond) but the video itself is expressive and very well produced. A strong look.
… Now, just you wait til’ you see what we all have in store in the coming months. Get ready.
K-OS has been steadily on his grind for years now, always pisses me off that so many continue to under appreciate him. Exit (2002) & Joyful Rebellion (2004) are must-have albums in my opinion.
In any case, last year he and his fellow Canadian comrade Drake collaborated on a track called ‘Faith’ for K-OS’ Anchorman Man mixtape, now the pair drop off part deux. Listen & download…
‘Strangest Feeling’ is the highly anticipated debut single from Jessie Ware.
Having already built a credible buzz around herself by collaborating with SBTRKT, Sampha & most recently Joker – she has emerged as one of the more exciting female vocalists on these shores.
‘Strangest Feeling’, due out on November 21st, is a strong first single – I’m impressed by it – both in an instrumental and melodic sense – not to mention Ware’s fantastically unique voice sounds incredible. Big fan of this.
I have fallen head over heels with Lana Del Rey. Blog darling or not, I think she’s dope. Her sound, her image – it’s all doing it for me.
It’s no surprise then that I got very happy when I saw our homie Jamie Woon post up a newly unleashed remix of Rey’s ‘Video Games’ single. This new take on her 60′s inspired ballad is infused with Woon-like tendencies – a sexy hollow beat, looped bass notes and electronic glitches. Is it better than the original? You decide – but it’s an interesting interpretation and one I will be reloading a fair few times.
