I loved Robin Thicke’s first two albums, his second in particular was a little special – not to mention, a commercial hit (‘Wanna Love You Girl’, ‘Lost Without U’ etc). After that however, I felt the ‘smooth-cool’ he sold got a little lost in clique and began to feel corny (that “crooner”/fedora steeze will never work). The odd song aside, no album of after 06′s The Evolution of Robin Thicke really compared – but could the tide be turning…?
Thicke’s new single ‘Love After War’ comes off his upcoming fifth album of the same name (Nov 15th). The LP is said to chronicle the highs and lows of a young married couple going through the motions of beginning a family (art imitating life, I presume). The track features a Stevie Wonder / Marvin Gaye groove, and sees Thicke sounding strong and melodic again – and while the line between credible and trite still feels quite prevalent here – I think this works. Lets see what else he comes with…

This new jam, ‘Pretty Lil’ Thing’ which reunites Robin with Lil’ Wayne has furthered my anticipation for the new album. Thicke is delivering some smooth, swagged out vocal melody – he’s back on his corny-less grown man vibes. [...]
