2 hours of Erykah Badu talking indepth about monumental years of her life and the creation, realisation and release of each of her albums. She also discusses her creative life with producers like Dilla, Madlid and Q-Tip – sharing personal anecdotes along the way. She speaks about what motivates her, what pushes her to evolve and offers advice to women in the industry who want to have a family. And although she denies any ‘drama’ with her long-time label Universal Records/Motown – she speaks candidly about the situation that arose after she released the video for ‘Window Seat’, as well as the uncertain ground the relationship sits on presently (which could ultimately affect the way her new album, produced by Flying Lotus, will be released).
This is a mesmerizing watch. It is 2 hours, but take your time with it, let it soak in.
Massive fans of Salva over on these ends, so it’s never a bad day when something new of his drops into our laps. This one comes by way of those continental G’s over at Moovmnt who passed it over to me with a simple “no sleeping on this one” message attached. Rightfully so too – ‘Obsessed’ features the bass-hungry sonics Salva has become known for, along side B Bravo’s fantastic vocoder skills. Funky as f*ck.
The track is lifted off Salva’s new EP Yellobone which is due out in November. Listen and download this tune for free below…
Not that I am a believer in All Hallows Eve, but if you are, this possibly could be a great soundtrack contender for tonight’s antics.
Modeselektor gets in the mysterious spirit with their latest track from third album, Monkeytown. Alongside the bizarre visuals, keen fan, Thom Yorke’s ghostly falsetto completes the eerie feel.
Whenever an artist passes away prematurely, you can rest assured their music will be repackaged, recycled and reused in the years (decades) following. It’s with very little surprise then that Amy Winehouse’s record label Island Records have just announced the release of a new album comprised of unheard original songs, as well as demo/new versions of previously released material – it will be called Lioness: Hidden Treasures and will hit shelves on December 5th. Got to love that Christmas rush.
In many ways, the project sounds promising – albeit a little premature. It will feature 12 songs including collaborations with Nas, Tony Bennett and productions from long-time collaborators Salaam Remi & Mark Ronson.
Speaking of the album, Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse says: “I spent so much time chasing after Amy, telling her off that I never realized what a true genius she was. It wasn’t until I sat down with the rest of the family and listened to this album that I fully appreciated the breadth of Amy’s talent, from jazz standards to hip hop songs, it really took my breath away. “Halftime”, I’d never heard before, is just incredibly beautiful. If the family had felt that this album wasn’t up to the standard of “Frank” and “Back To Black” we would never have agreed to release it and we believe it will stand as a fitting tribute to Amy ‘s musical legacy”.
… A donation of £1 from the sale of each album in the UK will be donated to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, founded shortly after her death in July.

Coco and Robin Hannibal are getting me through the winter months nicely. From their various individual projects, to their self titled album, I can’t get enough of the duo.
So of course I am most pleased that the Danish pair are coming back to London again. This time in the east of London at CAMP, tickets are on sale now and an advanced price of £8.50 can be bought here. Otherwise £12 on the door. Missed the last one, so there is no way I’m missing this show… see you there!
I’m a bit late on this one – but after discovering it tonight (I do enjoy those copious hours spent trawling through spotify) I felt it only necessary to post it up. Maybe some of you missed it when it hit the interwebs earlier this month too.
Back in April we posted the title track off Fink’s new album (out now) – it was beautiful, sombre and emotive… Characteristics that are gracefully magnified when observing Andreya Triana’s version. Her voice tells a thousand stories, it’s so tender and has such a gut-wrenching tone – this version elevates.
Triana’s talent continues to mesmerize me.
P.s Make sure you grab Fink’s album. It’s beautiful.
Mark Ronson pulls in an impressive line up made up of Erykah Badu, Mos Def & The Dap-Kings for the track he produced for the upcoming Hyundaio Veloster presented documentary film “RE:GENERATION”. The film follows DJ Premier, Pretty Lights, The Crystal Method, Mark Ronson & Skrillex as they “remix, recreate and re-imagine” five traditional styles of music.
Love this Southern-Funk – really impressed by Ronson’s foresight here. And Badu, those vocals – dammit!
At the risk of sounding pretentiously detached – Jill Scott’s The Light of the Sun was the first album of hers that I wasn’t able to connect with or feel her heart and soul through. Whether it had something to do with the way she left her last label, or something to do with her new record company, or whether she was going through something artistically or even personally at the time, for whatever reason – this album felt empty to me.
… And I feel the same about this new single and video.
Jilly looks beautiful and her voice is still as gorgeous as ever – no ones taking that away from her. But this song doesn’t give me anything new and offers no… ‘grit’ (for lack of a better word). I guess what I look for (in all artists) is artistic evolution and that’s something I unfortunately failed to see this time round.
I’ll always have a soft spot for MJB, she’s a legend and one of my favourite singers. But unfortunately I was never really sold on this record, I liked it – but didn’t love it. And sadly, the video hasn’t helped one bit. The poor production, cheap filters – nothing about this screams ‘Queen of Hip Hop Soul’ to me. That recession continues to bite.
Perfect music for the morning after the night before. I’m calling this mixtape… Cosmic Swag… Pixelated electronic downbeat goodness for your ears and available on a ‘name-your-price-flex’ over at the bandcamp here. It features a whole heap of artists I had previously never heard of – always nice. Big shout out to the homie Tone over @ The Loft for putting me on to this one. I’m going to go back to bed, put this on blast and dream about Tetris.
Blaxican produced by the beat conductor Madlib comes from the album Classic dropping next week, November 1. Directed by Eric Coleman and shot by B+ amongst others. This dope little black and white number is enough to get the head nodding.
As I sit on my balcony getting my holiday ‘orrrrn I couldn’t resist a cheeky post after seeing this. Having introduced Pixelord and Fish Touch to your here back in December, PinBoard homie Kidkanevil’s fine refix gets the video treatment. Smashing. Glitchy grimy goodness for your ears, another one of the tunes where you give any man on road screwface just for shits and giggles when this comes on the iPod.
Robin Hannibal just keeps going. After working on Quadron, Boom Clap Bachelors, Vindahl and his own solo project Bobby, he still somehow finds time to work on his current girlfriend, Louie’s new material.
LA based Louie showcases her tender voice on this atypical Hannibal production. Sax enthused, quirky soul is the norm for the Danish producer and although I am used to the silky voice of Coco, Louie seems to work this track just as well – I like. Although from the picture up top, I’m sure the boys may like her for a few other reasons.
We have been debating this in the PinBoard camp for a few months – The future of Beiber. Will he remain as an annoying teen sensation or will he graduate and move into a cooler realm, like his namesake, a la Justin Timberlake.
I was determined the latter would happen, I mean the kid has talent and it seems to have already begun. It has been reported that the Beib will be working with Drake and the producing perfectionist Mr West. on his new album Believe. Justin Beiber himself, recently spoke out and also said he will be working with “alot of other cool people” on the new album due for release next year.
For all those Beiber haters, you never know, you might be seeing a few of his tracks posted up on PinBoard in the coming year. Brace yourself people!
