Have a look at Emeli Sandé’s new video for ‘Heaven’ – I fell in love with this tune from the first time I heard it. Really love the way her vocals sound on this one and that Massive Attack inspired beat, with the strings and pinao lead - works perfectly.
Here’s another funky soul jam from Sir Peter Hadar. This man always seems brings that freshness, ‘Dancin’ is no exception. As for that artwork – I mean, yeah…
A satisfying slice of good ol’ soul pie from this young lady. Valencia Robinson’s creamy layered tone melts wonderfully over this laidback beat produced by Raynier “L-Blayze” Hodnett. Would be great to hear more of the same. Have a listen and download for free below.
Seems like the enigma, yet internet omnipresence, The Weeknd have fuelled a monochrome, rough sexed form of R’n'B that has definitely caught on. Next in line to follow suit is Young & SICK. Not knowing much about the group (as you would expect, all in the name of mystery maintanece) other then their own words:
“Fresh from Los Angeles via London comes Young & Sick. R&B vocals inspired by D’Angelo and Van Hunt. BASS inspired by dirt, sex, and sweat.”
I’m not sure I’m entirely convinced by the Young & SICK, in comparison to the intrigued feeling I possessed once I discovered The Weeknd. Yes, I’m feeling the vocals, the rugged bassline and the Tom Vek style cymbal bashing. Not so much a fan of the sounds mimicking a car going faster in the middle of the song, did throw me off a bit. Think it’s a grower. However there is something there, will make my call once I hear a few more tracks. What do you think?
During my usual playback of the Gilles Peterson show this week, I got mesmerized by this track and felt compelled to seek out more and dig deeper.
Lucky Paul, is a New Zealand native who has now settled in Berlin, Germany where he has crossed the paths of DJ Vadim and Yarah Bravo among others on his musical journey. Since the move, he has delivered a 4 track EP which has been released on London based label Somethink Sounds recently.
The breathy vocals and dubbed whirrings would not be as memorable without the percussive inserts and delayed electronic beat with an ample amount of space in between. Lucky Paul has added a lil’ something extra here, that just works.
When you’re FlyLo dropping tracks on a regular is nothing. Thankfully ‘nothing’ to Flying Lotus often results in ‘something’ really dope for us. After blessing us with a mixtape a couple weeks back the pioneering producer passed by his SoundCloud and posted a couple of songs for everyone’s listening pleasure.
We all waiting for Watch the Throne, it’s going to be large (well, it better be!). And now that we got an official release date – August 1st 2011 – it’s time to get our teeth into a new track off the project.
It is a radio rip but you know you’re going to press play regardless. CDQ added. Nice choice of sample, gotsta say…
Seen the teasers, the pictures and the behind the scenes. Now it’s time for the full – much hyped – video from Pusha T featuring ODWGKTA front man Tyler, the Creator.
Shouts to our Red Bull USA family for the premier.
Saw this flying around all the blogs today but only just had the time to sit and actually watch it. I wasn’t going to post it either simply because chances are you’ve already seen it – but after watching it through – I really couldn’t not post it. These two are bloody incredible, this whole skit is pure genius. And once again, biggup The Roots – the best band going.
As we reported Björk released her Biophilia app this week as part of her new multimedia album (of the same name). In the video above she explains, in her own words, what this project is and what it represents.
Gone is the new double EP from our girl Muhsinah, it includes two separate 3-track extended players called Urban & Suburban. It’s been a while since we heard anything concrete from this empyreal songstress, I’ve missed her unique musings. As ever this project was written, composed, produced and recorded by Muhsinah.
Peep Ed Sheeran’s video for his new single ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’, taken off his forthcoming debut album +. Seen Ed perform this song a number of times before, always felt it was a strong single, glad it’s being released. Really like the video too.
As his first single still sits confortably at #3 in the UK charts, lets hope this follow up scores a similar (if not higher) fate.
Our Amsterdam homies Full Crate & Mar recently performed in New York City at The Loft. I heard through the grapevine they tore it up – and from what I can see from these videos (presented and produced by Tone) – my sources were right. The two perform ’2U4U’ (up top) and ‘We’re So Broken’ and also took some time for a quick interview. Peep the second performance and the interview after the jump…
Not to toot our own horn, but we have been championing some great albums this year and it seems the prestigious Mercury Prize panel of 2011 agree with many of our recommendations. This years nominations were just announced via Facebook and I would say is a good mix of some of the best longplayers of the last 12 months.
Nominations include strong favourite Adele (21) , PinBoard homies, Ghostpoet’s (Peanut Butter Blues and Melencholy Jam) and Katy B (On a Mission). Radiohead’s The King of Limbs and my personal favourite Metronomy’s The English Riveria. James Blake is also thrown in the mix for good measure.
It is certainly a good spectrum of acts but it would have been good to see Jamie Woon on the list too – he delivered one of the most impressive and accomplished albums of 2011.
The winner will be announced by Jools Holland on September 6th.
…Who’s your money on? Peep the full list over the jump.
