I am over the moon that September sees the release of the fresh new longplayer from crate digging supremo…DJ Shadow. Titled ‘The Less You Know The Better’ it is sure to be nothing but fire and this new single comes from the album and also an EP, also called ‘I Gotta Rokk’ which drops tonight. It is going to have to keep you happy until September!! Press play, download, go dig your crates….
Shouts to the good people over at Moovmnt for putting me on to this French beat wizard. Exactly what I needed to add to my playlist whilst I sit here trying to mark 40 bits of science coursework…living the dream as always. This beat ( minus the awful DJ Clue-esque interruptions) comes with a neck breaking delayed drum pattern accompanied by some face-gurning bass licks and nice synth action that compliments it well before returning to that bass driven snap. I really feel this one. Check out some more Evil Needle here.
You may remember us making a little noise about Elzhi’s new project. A reworking of Nas’ godbody testament, Illmatic (still the most important LP of my teen years) featuring live instrumentation from Will Sessions.
As an original stan, do I feel it’s doing the legacy justice? I’m 5 tracks in right now – and it’s actually sounding incredible.
Real heads, pop this in your player (via XXL) and rejoice. It’s a strictly gully morning these sides.
The one we address as SBTRKT (alongside the wingman we know as Sampha) is on a roll this year. Now he gives Channel 4 and Abbey Road Studios the live treatment in their new edgy collaborative show, ‘Abbey Road Debuts’ . This track is taken from his forthcoming release on Young Turks. June 24th. Mark the date.
The dangerous duo of Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek are releasing their new debut longplayer 93 Million Miles on Warp next week and to celebrate the release they are giving away a cheeky single which you can download for free on their site . How bloody nice of them. Enjoy and make sure you cop the album this week.
Here is a new video offering from Robert Winter who has been photographing fLako on tour. Not in love with the stop-motionesque nature of this one but the track bumps none the less. fLako’s new long player The Mesektet drops in late May and the PinBoard Team previewed it back in March. Check it here.
‘The Vision (Let Me Breath)’ is the first single taken off Joker’s debut album, it features the incomparable Jessie Ware.
… Beyond excited to hear news of Joker’s new album, we’ve been waiting. One of the most exciting producers we got. A great look having Jessie on there too – her voice is pure summer vibes. This is doing it.
Swear down, it seems everytime DāM-FunK puts out a track, the sun shines in London. Rightfully so too, I say. Here goes a new unreleased jam for your Tuesday – this should really help if you’re stressed at work.
A day late, but I’m a firm believer that mothers should be celebrated everyday – so, this still matters.
Yesterday, some of those outside the UK celebrated the ones who brought them into this world and in honour, Marsha Ambrosius released a dedication to her mum (and all the mums out there). The short interlude features a beautifully composed piano section, which Ambrosius effortlessly sings and ad-libs over…
Benny Tones’ debut album Chrysalis has been out for a while now – it’s been a permanent fixture on my iPod since the first time I heard it. As engineer and producer for one our favourite Soul-Funk groups Electric Wire Hustle, it wasn’t a massive shock to hear such fantastic music on his solo project.
I’m just posting this EPK up because I always want to bring attention to great music – so, while some of you may already have the LP, I’m aware a few of you may have missed it – it’s cool, just grab a copy now! You won’t regret it. Promise.
This is progressive, contemporary Soul at it’s best.
For his forthcoming Ed Banger LP Total, French Avant-Garde whizz SebastiAn has drafted in Stones Throw’s old-fashioned don Mr. Hawthorne to assist with this robo-funk cut that after debating it with Speeakz sounds like i. ‘Kiss’ by Prince, ii. A 1994 Prince track we can’t remember the name of, iii. ‘Freak’ by George Michael.
Can’t fib and say I was a huge fan of Space Is Only Noise. Whilst a number of peers jizzed themselves to the NY/Chilean virtuoso’s tortoise-plod ‘Dance’ productions and child-grooming baritone, I didn’t feel quite as arrested. Perhaps the electronica was just too intellectual, or perhaps it was just pretentious laptop twaddle and rainforest samples.
Nonetheless, this unrehearsed cover of the mesmerizing ‘Ishamel’ by South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim recorded down at Maida Vale sounds wonderfully organic, loose and bass-driven. Fine accompaniment comes in the form of Will Epstein (sax) Dave Harrington (organ/piano) and Ian Simms (percussion).
The second whopping refix project of Wah Wah 45 chanteuse Stac’s debut album Turn That Light Out courtesy of some of the most cutting edge producers in the UK right now.
The Kidkanevil and Blue Daisy flips come highly recommended by PMOI.
