This month sees the release of Mizz Beatz’ new EP Are We the Dictators?, released via Eglo Records. The 5 track EP showcases the multifaceted influences that shape Beats’ musical apperception.
Each track encased within the extended player is produced with crisp precision, cementing Mizz Beatz’ talents as a credible beatsmith. Warm, sexy, hard, gritty and at times, down right dirty sonics compile this project. Each song variegates in style and while this for many will not be considered a bad thing, it may leave others somewhat disjointed.
Blending styles and genres is never bad thing (in my opinion) and fans of Mizz Beatz will already know that her influences and scope run deep and wide – her credentials speak for themselves (Grime, Dubstep, Garage, R&B, Soul, Hip Hop etc). However, creating an EP with songs which spasmodically vary in tone does runs the risk of unsettling.
This said, Are We the Dictators? ultimately proves Mizz Beats to be a broad-minded music maker, who possesses the ability to display contrasting influences and in turn sets herself a part from all those other ‘run of the mill’ beat practitioners out there. She is without question one of the most exciting and promising producers around – I actually don’t think we’ve seen the best of her yet.
Listen to the melodic ’2bit Road’ below. Cop the EP on February 14th 2011.
Have a look at the first teaser from CunningLynguists upcoming album Oneirology. This very short clip has got me quite excited about this album. Need to get my hands on it soon. It drops on March 22nd.
It’s 3.52am, I just found this on the interweb and am now bumping my head to it. FS Green puts yet another sonically satisfying mix together, this one – filled to the brim with soulful-hip-hop-tronica by way of fLako, Hayzee, Salva and of course, the man himself.
This one goes to all our fellow AM marauders – working, playing and/or messing. Enjoy.
Raphael Saadiq delivers a brilliant video for his new single ‘Good Man’ taken off his new album Radio (March 22nd). I really like the way this was shot and how it captured the story of the song so brilliantly. Oh, and I love this song – but I guess that goes without saying, right?
As James Blake’s debut album continues to earn rave reviews, the singer / producer has released a unique rendition of ‘A Case of You’, a song originally written and performed by Joni Michell.
I really like this, I almost wish there was more of this on his album. He sounds really good singing this song and I love the arrangement – the piano lead is beautiful.
Have a look at Plan B’s new “mega-ad”, which will premier on Ch4 an ad break this Sunday at 22:15. The short film captures the Strickland Banks story, featuring never before seen footage, it pieces together the videos so far.
