Just spotted this new film about The Roots over at HT, put together by Cam Be and Jeff Baraka. It was filmed during the latter part of 2010, mostly backstage during their shows.

“I have always been a huge fan of the music created by the best band to ever grace Hip Hop genre. In this a film I wanted to not only highlight the versatility of a group that has played with almost everyone in the industry. But also capture candid moments of real human beings just trying to share the gifts they have been given to the best of their abilities” – Cam Be.

Press play.

Hip Hop heads come one, come all. This is BIG!

Two of my favourite emcees, Mos Def and Talib Kweli – collectively known as Black Star – are coming to Hammersmith Apollo on May 10th. This has come out of no where, the cynic in me says the new project is on it’s way. Yeah, the one Talib has been talking about since ’05!

I will leave the speculation aside and just rejoice.

Alongside the duo, will be Hip Hop legends De La Soul and Rakim. It’s going to be a neck breaking night, hope you guys are ready!

Grab your tickets here.

Never bore of seeing or hearing Quadron perform, this is a beautifully put together and edited piece of performance footage. Coco’s voice is so tender and pristine. I love it.

Plan B absolutely obliterated everyone else’s production at last nights Brit Awards. Full band, mad-men protesters, riot police and a man on fire – he smacked it. While my favourite performance of the night goes to Adele, Plan B stepped up and raised the bar. Tinie Tempah’s pyrotechnics were impressive, but Plan B’s concept won.

The Defamation of Strickland Banks was without question the best commericial album of 2010.What he did (both artistically and as a strategic marketing tool) was brilliant and he deserves every accolade awards to him. He’s now in a position that as an hard-nose, honest emcee he would never have been in – he can now create what ever type of music he wants – his fanbase is there waiting. Although, I remain sceptical about this Reggae album he keeps talking about. I want a full on Hip Hop record next time round.

The homie Kenny Fresh (who’s site Fresh Selects is about to be relaunched) shot over this Roddy Rod EP preview titled Vudu.For.U. The extended player sees Roddy chopping, looping and magically recomposing D’Angelo’s classic Voodoo album. I know that sounds like sacrilege, I know how much this album means to us all – but, give it a go. Have a listen. I think it’s pretty damn good! He doesn’t abuse the original sound, he just flips it.  Look forward to hearing it in full.

We posted the teaser video for Yult & Tanya Auclair’s new EP Animal Inside last week, now it’s time to hear the first single from it. ‘Inland Empire’, available for free download (below), is a great example of the type of music they’re creating. I love their  folk-tribal sound, Tanya’s unique delivery shines through like a beacon, while Yult’s production sets a very atmospheric, and rather sexy tone.

Big fan. Animal Inside drops next week. We’ll remind, don’t worry.

I’m a massive fan of AFTA-1 & Nikko Gray, so I’ve been looking forward to this EP since I first heard they were making it. It finally dropped today via their bandcamp page. I haven’t yet got my teeth sunk in, but I have no doubt this will something my ears will approve of. Yours will to, I’m sure. On my 5th straight listen, this EP is something you need. AFTA-1′s production is fire, melodic, soulful but with a nice boom clap backing. I can even hear some Burial influences in there (see: ‘Expected’). He’s on that slow-wine flex; Nikko’s sexy vocals float across his sultry beats and chords with ease and vigour. This is great.

Have a listen to the EP below, and then click that little ‘buy’ button to purchase for just $4. Bargain.

This songs ability to shut everybody up is quite remarkable. One of the best written songs I’ve heard in a very long time. Adele is like no other, her voice is too much.
