Fabric on a Monday is not my usual thing, but exceptions can definitely be made when it’s of the Ryan Leslie calibre. EC1 was lucky to play host to the majorly underrated, extremely talented musician, producer and singer. Luckily, inside the venue, there was enough appreciation in the room, to make R-Les realise London has his back.
Arriving the minute the American touched the stage, I fought for my space to see as much of the band and the man himself. The first half of the show, I have to admit, I was slightly disappointed. The heavy reliance towards the pre programmed sounds to recreate the track and not the live instruments made it feel more like a club PA, rather than a live concert at times.
Going through half live and half sung tracks ‘Rock U’, ‘Just Right’ and ‘My Girl’, it took the excitement of Ryan taking off his top and bearing a wifebeater to bring my attention back (Lol)
Tracks like ‘Addiction’ were definitely crowd pleasers. Every girl in the audience happily took up the role of Cassie, confessing their addiction to him. Singing repetitively ”I’m addicted to you!”
‘Quicksand’ was another favourite of mine and led the way with less production into the second half of the show. The guitar solo was H-Amazing and was what I was waiting for. Rock, funk and soulful all wrapped up in one, shout out to R-Les’s guitarist!
After praising London for welcoming him, he bought out one of our very own to join him on stage. Bluey Robinson performed his independently released track “I know” (circa 2009) with R-Les, this time wearing his rapper mask. It worked and although the majority of the crowd seemed to never have heard of Bluey, they seemed to ‘preciate the vocals.
Finishing the night with bangers ‘Diamond Girl’ and ‘I Wonder’ made me wonder why this guy does not get the recognition I believe he deserves. He’s crazy talented. He had none less then five different types of keys on stage. FIVE! Who does that??!
Despite not hitting the charts, I am a believer that good music will always shine through. If ever you want an example: Ryan Leslie at Fabric. True shining star.
