I caught up with GLC when he was in town last week getting ready for his long awaited release of “Love, Life and Loyalty” and before his exclusive showcase (Review and pictures coming soon). I wasn’t sure what to expect as GLC had somehow been in the back of the queue of Kanye West friends to come to the forefront.
So entering the hotel room with no expectations, I was happily welcomed by the 6ft tall something. Greeted with a warm smile, a huge hug and a compliment on my clothes. I was immediately sold and my female ego was filled, but then I put those comforts to the side and got down to business.
The Name
The name came about from when I was a kid, when I was in a street organisation called “Gangster Disciples”. My government name is Leonard, so they would call me ‘Gangster L’ and then from that the ‘L’ became Legendary.
I lived a life that was full. I lost my father at eight months, lost my mom at 12. Diagnosed with diabetes at 14. I actually died when I was 14. I was resurrected. it was when I had a pretty high blood sugar number and I must of went out for a minute.
Any man who has faced the face of death and came back from it, thats Legendary. All the things I have experienced throughout my life, like go to funerals, being in the midst of gang violence and things of that nature to come out from that and be positive is key. To be an inspriration to the youth and people as a whole, is a blessing. And thats where my name came about. Gangster Legendary Crisis.
Don’t give in to the crisis, just become legendary and rise above it.
This is a jam session. An act of improvisation without preparation. Here goes another great collaboration from Bilal & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, this time they perform the classic ‘Tainted Love’…
Stones Throw’s MED drops his 3rd installement of his Bang Ya Head series, with production and guest features including Madlib, J Rocc, Georgia Ann Muldrow, SJ Babu, Wildchild, Khalil & a few others – this is definitely one you’ll be rocking out to for a minute. Download up top and peep the track list after the jump…
If you’re gonna have a tune as a big as ‘Heard It All Before’, you really need to come harder than this. I’m aware that tune dropped years ago but it still stands as a brilliant R&B tune which everyone gets hyped over when played. Unfortunately this just doesn’t cut it – on the up side though, her voice sounds real nice still. Anderson’s new album The Sun Shines Again is due out November 2nd.
We’ve told you about Tha Boogie a few times here on PinBoard over the past couple months – hit the search button and get educated – I like them. I like what they’re producing. Under the wise arm of Raphael Saadiq these guys are making something that is, in my opinion, quite fresh. Peep their latest video up top.
Last Thursday, whilst the R&B crew held it down at the epic En Vogue concert, I went over to the other side of town to The Forum in Kentish Town for some Chase and Status.
Tired, hungry and in no way fully prepared for the energetic crowds I was to meet, I approached the venue feeling…well nervous. Nervous because I was wondering after a night of Chase & Status, how I would make it through the next day at work. I should say, all of these feelings were not uncalled for as I had already had the pleasure to see Chase & Status in the summer. And I knew they don’t play.
But by the time the, ahem, ‘interesting’ Liam Bailey performed and the alternative sounding foursome Monarchy did their thing, three minutes into Chase and Status, I was glad I came out to witness their first gig before dropping their brand new album. They came harrrrdd!
MC Rage fronted the show, being the mouthpiece whilst Chase held it down on the left and Status on the right with nothing less than a phenomenal piece of drum kit art in the middle. It added a nice traditional live element to the show, was cymbals galore and simply looked serious. I said they don’t play right!
Reggae influenced song ‘No Problem’ and classics like ‘Take Me Away’ allowed the bass to literally suffocate the crowd and was woofing all around the intimate venue. Three songs in and it was starting to become one of the best indoor performances I have been to this year!
Super-stardom calls. The Smith children pose in support of Alicia Keys’ ‘Buy Life’ campaign – the t-shirts have scannable technology built-in which allows users to use their mobile phones to donate those who suffer from HIV/AIDS in Africa & India. Willow & Jaden join Usher, Swizz Beatz, Kim Kardashian and others who are all helping spread the word.
On November 30th Chrisette Michele will be dropping her newest LP Let Freedom Reign for us to consume – the singer took to twitter eariler today to release the real artwork for her album (there was a different version floating around the blogosphere). She looks good as a ringleader, interesting title for an album too.
