KanYe is a genius. Just had to say that. It’s true. He is one of (if not the) defining figures in popular culture today. We may not always agree with what he does or says, we may be confused by some of the things he creates – but underpinning all of that is his continuous effort to not only create art but also to push forward pop culture.

Visually the piece was beautiful. The colours, the imagery, the movement – everything about the way it was made was brilliant.

And of course, it’s completely up to interpretation.

The dinner table scene was the most prolific for me and crafted much of my opinion on the entire film. The ballerinas were dope, that whole set was great (that green wall was dope) the camera work there was so inspiring. My opinion: The Pheonix represented the way the world sees KanYe. Her watching the news and being scared, being told not to “believe what you see on the news”. Having to burn to ‘return home’, the conversation about turning to stone if she wasn’t able to be ‘reborn’ – it all (in my opinion) relates back to KanYe and the year or two he’s had.

Just my thoughts.

…I’d love to hear your thoughts/opinions/interpretations. Please do share.

P.s Will update the video soon as I can.

Hands down one of my favourite gigs of the year and something I never thought I’d be able to witness. En Vogue, a group I was introduced to by my big sisters when I was a kid were finally doing their thing, live, in front of me. It was a moment.

For the first time in 18 years the Funky Diva’s rocked London’s indig02 last Thursday performing some of their biggest hits and running through some massive soul classics (think: ‘Tell Me Something Good’, ‘Proud Mary’, ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ etc). The ladies, who looked sensational, were on top form and simply reminded us why vocally, they remain, the best sounding girl group. I can’t think of any other female group in which each member can sing solo equally well.

I’ve had a thing for Dawn Robinson since I was a yoot (I even brought her solo single for like £7.99 on import from HMV back in the day, how many of you know about ‘Envious’?), so to see her up close like that was…Special. Haha. She looks as hot as ever and sounded brilliant too. Hearing her perform Lucy Pearl’s ‘Don’t Mess With My Man’ was N-E-X-T. Would have been dope to hear ‘Dance Tonight’, but that’s just me being greedy.

Their performance of ‘Don’t Let Go’ (above) was the one though. Like, mind shatteringly brilliant. Man, I love that song. Don’t we all?

It was a short but very, very sweet concert – everyone left with a smile on their face.Peep that performance and more after the jump…

I have  been happily listing together some of the best live music events for the past few months, so you all can know what is going on in the capital. However, last week I went out of the capital and ventured to the City in Manchester.

A three day event holds talks, debates and discussions throughout the day and multiple music events all within a five mile radius at night. My favourite part was obviously the latter.

I was somewhat disappointed with the diversity of artists at times. But all this was salvaged with good ol’ Andreya Triana, Ed Sheeran and the duo of amazingness that was Mount Kimbie among a few others.

Never had the pleasure of watching Mount Kimbie live but I was more than thankful when I turned up at Band on the Wall in Manchester’s Northern quarter to a packed audience gearing up for their soundtrack for Friday night.

The London twosome went through their old (but still relatively new) tracks from their 2009 EP’s and going full throttle into their newer material. I was taken into their dreamland of hip hop breaks, with electronic synths and the post dubstep theme wrapping it up all so neatly. Not entirely aware of all their track names and songs but that was irrelevant, I was enjoying the full hour set just as much as the cool kids who knew about Mount Kimbie way before I did. (Shoutout to Danny)

Highlights: The whole performance.  But ‘Ruby’ and ‘Before I Move Off’  from the new longplayer actually had me closing my eyes, dancing and taken to another place. Technically I was in another place: Manchester!

Will definitely want to check out these boys again live, but for now I am more than satisfied with my dosage of Mount Kimbie.

The G.O.O.D Music movement continues, this time Yeezy grabs Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco & Big Sean to help out. This may be my favourite from the G.O.O.D music series…
