M.I.A goes all kinds of Viral with this latest offering from her most recent LP ‘MAYA’. Now i know PinBoard big man Speeakz is not her biggest fan but after seeing her at the Big Chill fest this summer I am backing her all the way. She knows how to rock a show (and shut it down it down by getting the crowd to bumrush it!!)
From his LP ‘Good Things’ dropping next week (Unless you buy it online now at Stonesthrow.com) here is ‘ You Make Me Smile’. Don’t Sleep on seeing this dude at the Jazz Cafe. Make sure you peep our gig listings here to keep up to date..
Hmmmm…..so when I first saw ‘New Speech Debelle’ track produced by Bonobo I got excited! I have always been the first to say I loved Speech Debelle’s debut long player that won her the Mercury prize (‘Better Day’s’ still gets rinsed on my Ipod on the daily)..now I know the Jury is split with Debelle and i’m looking to see if she comes with fire on her new LP. This track however is a straight jack move….I am not sure if this is being released on Speech’s new album…I hope not. She has taken Bonobo’s ‘Stay The Same’ instrumental from his INCREDIBLE ‘Black Sands’ and given it her own re-working. The problem for me is that ‘stay the same’ sounded as close to perfect as a song could with the lovely Andreya Triana on Vocals. Sadly this version just doesn’t cut the mustard…come on now Speech. Hook back up with Micachu and the Shapes and come with something fresh please. Safe.
Cee-Lo was originally meant to play Cargo on September 27th, but his show has now been pushed back to October 25th. Same place, same time – just different day. Eh, what’s a month? Tickets are on sale now, but I presume they won’t be available for much longer. They’re priced at £21.50 and can be purchased via Cargo’s website.
J Treole are 4 guys from the Cambridge areas brought together by their love of music and wanting to bring a different sound to what all the local bands in the area were playing. They produced a mesh of HipHop rhymes and Jazz structures built around their superb musical technique and musical influences. They have already released 2 EP’s that have won them rave reviews but it is their new recording “Run Walk Crawl” that is really getting people talking. It’s their finest work to date, and they have grown and evolved to a new level of brilliance.
The first track “Symphony of the Shrapnel” eases you into the EP with nice chords & beats (with a little reggae break in there too) whilst the synths and distorted guitar giving it a darker edge, before building up towards the end with some nice BVs. It’s the 2nd track “Skydive” that’s the stand out and takes you somewhere else, tune is straight epic.
The chords just make the song feel massive. The beat and bass drives the song (with some beautiful fills from both inbetween) keeping your head bopping. The horns and BV’s are used really well to help build the track and give them an extra quality. And finally the acoustic guitar just gives it a commercial edge making it easy on the ear.
The final track “Mister Wolf” finishes things off nicely. Similar to the first track but this one has a swagger about it. Cool verses with a dark chorus ending the EP real nice and leaving you wanting more.
All in all I’m really loving this. It has the feel of early Jamiroquai and 4hero records and what they would sound like if you had Roots Manuva rhyming on top. Music like this is rare simply because the level of musicianship required to make it is HIGH and takes work. This really is a superb piece of work and for a pound you can’t go wrong really. Looking forward to seeing whats next for these guys but don’t sleep on them, bloody brilliant.
Listen to ‘Skydive’ up top and their EP in full below (on sale for just £1!)…
I first saw Amber aka Phresh Mentality at a Writers Block event a while ago, I remember her bringing something really fresh (excuse the pun). I’ve seen her live a couple times more after that and each time she impressed me with her relatable and honest lyrics. Her humour was also something that really grabbed my attention, something her newest video, for a poem called ‘Single’, displays brilliantly. I specifically remember this poem from the last time I saw her too because I really enjoyed it – I’m am glad she decided to release a video for it.
Nicki Minaj covers the latest issue of Complex Magazine, after the jump check some footage of her on the shoot and a little interview with the publication where she shows off her newest accent. Manchester, stand up!
Faith Evan’s new single ‘Gone Already’ gets it’s official video release, peep it up top. She looks good and this song is growing on me, her voice is still strong.

After a seemingly long weekend, Bruno Mars returns with a brand new track off his upcoming album Doo-Wops & Hooligansfeaturing Damien Marley. Despite his recent troubles, this song is undeniably good. The Marley feature works great too.
Shouts to SBTV for capturing this footage of Jessie J performing ‘Mama Knows Best’, the song which first introduced us to this singing sensation. Been saying it for ages, but this woman’s voice is fu*king NEXT! The control, the range – everything about it is just brilliant.
If like me you are still working and need something to keep that mind ticking I have just the thing….A little promo mix to stream (sorry no download…) that Kode 9 has put together before his string of shows over in Asia. Giving you that Monday FUNK! I personally can’t get enough of it at the moment and those G’s over at Stones Throw and putting it out there thick and fast. Here is a treat produced by PinBoard favourite Dam-Funk. Stones Throw has announced an upcoming album from former Slave frontman and funk music OG Steve Arrington to be entirely produced by Dam-Funk. “I Be Trippin” is the first taste of their collaboration. It’s got that west coast vibe……I dig’s it!
