Unfortunately this video isn’t embedable at the moment (record labels, come out the Jurassic age already!), but click the image up top to Check out Tinie’s latest video – it’s always great to see a new artist with a sizeable budget for a video – this looks pretty major. I know a lot of people have reacted negatively to this track and I kinda understand why – but it’s actually growing on me with each listen. The video helps a lot too.
Tinie Tempah is without a doubt one of the biggest artists in the UK right now. Having released one of the biggest songs of the year, the number 1 selling ‘Pass Out’, he quickly released ‘Frisky’, a solid follow up track (which went straight in at number 2). Now, on his 3rd single ‘Written in the Stars’, Tinie is preparing the release of his debut album Disc-Overy on October 4th.
Recorded over a 11 month period in London and Sweden, the album features an “array of production that encompasses gritty grime, tempo-shifting drum and bass and dark, brooking pop”.
“On every single song you’ll get a line that reveals what life was like for me. I recorded a lot of it after ‘Pass Out’ went to No.1, so that gave me a chance to reflect on life before and after achieving success,” says Tinie. “Going to No.1 gave me a chance to consider how far I’ve come, but also how far I intend to go”.

Rap-Up catches up with Drizzy the Blackberry event he attened and performed at earlier this week, who says his new R&B mixtape is coming soon and that he’s now working on his second album.
I don’t know about you but I feel it’s way too early for this dude to be recording his second album. His first album just dropped. I kinda miss the days where artists used to sit on an LP for a year or two, tour with it, let it settle and mature, get the fans wanting more. Maybe I’m a little old skool, but I’m not entirely sure I want to hear ‘new’ music from Drake yet. I’m still listening to his debut.
Always happy to give shine to new artists, even more so if they’re from our home town. Was just sent the press release for this and thought to pop it up…
Having already worked with the likes of Leona Lewis, Estelle & Lauryn Hill, Rian Peters has been making quite the name for himself within the UK underground scene. The video up top is of his debut single ‘Getaway’ and features the Godfather of Grime himself, Wiley.
There’s something about this tune I really like – I can hear something in the melody that is definitely working and I like the beat too. My biggest ‘issue’ with it would be that I can hear indications of it leaning towards that ‘UK urban pop’ sound I really don’t like. There’s not so much of it here that it ruins the song, but I just wonder if that’s the direction Rian is going in (and if it is, it’s completely fine – it just wouldn’t be my cup of tea). The key factor that saves this song from sounding like that is of course (aside from the melody) Wiley. His opening and closing verses work great. Smart move.
Rian Peter’s debut album is scheduled for an Autumn release.
Janelle Monae will be performing at Alexandra Palace on December 3rd with Vampire Weekend!
It seems like Miss Monae can’t stay away from London, having already performed a sold out show this year and gearing for another sold out gig in September at KoKo – she’s back for a third time – this time on a bigger scale. While I can’t say I’m the biggest Vampire Weekend fan, their Contra album was pretty special – undeniably so. But I guess for me, it’s obviously more about seeing Janelle Monae at this historic and beauitful venue. And again, it’s in Norf. Bonus.
Tickets are on sale now via seetickets for £22.50. Go get em’ before they (inevitably) sell out.
Miguel talks to MTV about his collaboration with J.Cole on his new single ‘All I Want Is You’. Lemme tell you, this tune is quite possible one of my most rinsed singles of 20Ten. I still listen to it on a regular basis – it’s such a great song, I pray the rest of this guys material is as good as his debut single. Salaam Remi’s production is so solid (as always) and Miguel’s vocals on it work a treat. Having J.Cole on there is just an added bonus.
Ok, let me just ‘warn you’ first, this is a little ‘out there’ and while I’m pretty confident a good few PinBoard readers will really enjoy this, I’m also sure many, simply won’t. If you remember we reviewed Gonjasufi’s incredible album A Sufi and A Killer a while back – I was so blown away by it. It was like nothing I had heard before (or since). It’s very weird, but weird in a good way.
Anyways – that album has now been revisited and done so in a very cool way…
“Gonjasufi has assembled a collection of artists in his musical world and invited them to exchange ideas. In this spirit, the symbolic and musical centerpiece of the album, as well as its namesake, is the result of the mutual admiration formed between Gonjasufi and Broadcast and The Focus Group. A bewitching, drastic re-working of ‘DedNd’ it takes the form of a suite of layered compositions and radiophonic transmissions”
Other reinterpretations by Mark Pritchard, Shlomo, Jeremiah Jae, Bibio, Bear In Heaven and Oneothric Point Never further the epic sounding nature of this soundclash. The great thing about this project is that it lends itself perfectly to the original piece, it always makes sense.
The Caliph’s Tea Party is released on October 4th, you can preview two tracks via the soundcloud player below…
New music from J.Cole entitled ‘Blow Up’ which will feature on his as yet untitled debut album. Most of us can relate to this tune. I actually can’t wait for the album, I really like how although J.Cole has mad hype around him, he isn’t over exposed or over saturating the game. Not to mention he backs himself up every time by delivering great verses, with mad flow. ‘The Blow Up’ is fu*king hard, I am definitely bumpin’ this right now – produced by the man himself too.
It’s official – KanYe West will return to the MTV Video Music Awards this year.
After last years shambolic stage crash, no one knew for sure if he’d make it back this year, but I guess it takes 12 months to forgive and forget because MTV have clearly invited him to perform (they’d be stupid not to have, really). The Grammy Award winning rapper took to his twitter to officially announce his upcoming performance.
Speaking this week in an interview, West said that the backlash he received after last years show helped him a lot – saying “I needed that. I have to have humility. I had the truth and confidence, but I had to add humility and empathy. I added those after I got beat up”. I really hope that’s true and I really hope he means it – and while I stay somewhat sceptical – I will give him the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.
Either way, make sure you’re right here on September 12th for our usual award ceremony coverage.
One of my favourite bands, UNKLE, are back with TWO brand new videos for their new single ‘The Answer’…
The first is directed by John Hillcoat (“The Road”), and features (one of my favourite British actors) Ray Winstone recalling how his brush with death gave him a new lease and prospective on life. The second is directed by Ross Cairns and is actually my favourite of the two. Check the second video out after the jump…
I’m pretty sure most PinBoard readers will be familiar/fans of UNKLE, but if you’re not – press play and have a listen. I reckon you’ll dig what they’re about. And if you’re not feeling this track, explore their earlier material. It’s pretty special.
