I fuxx with Faithless (sometimes, at least). This is the video for their brand new single, ‘Feelin’ Good’ featuring Dido (‘member her?) taken from their most recent album The Dance. I can’t say I’m really feelin’ this tune though, they’ve had much better. The video is funny/cool, but did feel like a car advert – or was that the point? I don’t know.
N*E*R*D recently had a Live Session with MTV where they performed a mix of new and old material including ‘Everyboyd Nose’, ‘Sooner or Later’, ‘Hot N Fun’ and a brand spanking new tune called ‘Help Me’. Thanks to the folks over at the neptunes.org we have the audio files to listen to and enjoy. Download the entire set below or alternatively just listen/cop the new single ‘Help Me’…
Our friends over at 2dopeboyz just dropped their latest mixtape edition which not only deserves a download, but also a massive congrats. It’s pretty hard. The tape features exclusive music from Torae, Skyzoo, CurT@!n$, Tonedeff, PackFM, Brown Bag AllStars, K. Sparks, ESSO, The Lessondary, Donny Goines, Fresh Daily, 8thW1 and a whole heap of others – peep the tracklist after the jump. ]
The way the lady in this clip calls Brandy the “vocal bible” is next. And actually, kinda true. Brandy is hands down one of the most technically skilled singers we have. Add to that the true unique nature of her tone, it’s over. I just need new music from her and that new music needs to be high quality and solid.
…Are you hearing those riffs? Song sounds nice, her vocals = butter.
We always love connecting with you guys outside the blog, social networking is obviously the best way to do this. It’s always dope when one of our readers recommend a new artist to check out, or a new track/video to feature. Or when someone suggests we ‘do more of this’ or ‘little less of that’ etc – that’s dope. So, if you haven’t already, follow us on twitter, ‘LIKE’ us on (our new) facebook page and subscribe to our YouTube channel…
Last night as we were in the queue for Brainfeeder (more on that a little later) crew member Felicia told me about this tune. She said, and I quote, “its sick bruv”. I trust her word, so when I woke up this morning afternoon I decided to check it out. She wasn’t lying. It’s actually pretty damn good. That ‘Pulp Fiction’ intro, the beat, his flow, the lyrical content – it all works. The thing I love about this track so much is the fact that Wretch is clearly aiming for that mainstream appeal, but isn’t producing that standard Euro/UK Urban Pop everyone ends up making with their eyes on the charts. This will work on the radio and in the clubs. Result.
First up, I’m not sure I can call this a ‘new song’ or not. Second up, I miss Floetry. Thirdly, Full Crate is too dope. Fourthly, I’m not the worlds biggest spoken word fan but this is doing it for me right now.
Ok, now that’s out the way let me just explain this a little more. Full Crate, a big fan of Def Jam Poetry, decided to to create his own ‘variation’ of Floetry’s ‘Fantastise’ poem which they did back 2005. He laces the track with a really subtle beat, which in my opinion is quite essential – simply because as I stated up top, I’m not the biggest spoken word fan – so adding this element to this gives me an entirely new prospective. I really love this idea and so hope we are treated to more like it. This is a mood setter and I know you know what I mean.
El DeBarge is on the comeback and I thank the universe he’s back doing what he does best. ‘Second Chance’ (the title track to his new album) is a beautiful, heartfelt, almost painstaking ballad. This track showcases his ability to not only write great songs, which remain relevant and contemporary, but also those vocals (and that range) that we all know and love so much. DeBarge’s comeback kick-started at this years BET Awards 2010 and now this track signifies the official beginning of his return. And oh, what a return.
El DeBarge said via Twitter that he was working with Faith Evans on his new studio. Could this really be the return of R&B?
London, please stand up. Cooly G returns with two new tunes via Hyperdub in the shape of ‘Up In My Head’ & ‘Phat Si’. Following on from the massive success of ‘Narst’/'Love Dub’ – it’s time to get things poppin’ once again. My love for this lady runs deep, here’s why…
‘Up In My Head’ is a perfect example of why I love this lady so much. The production is sexy as hell, it’s soft but has a distinct edge to it – the bassline pounds just in enough and does so with perfect subtlety. Her vocals weave in and out offering a sightly garage-esque vibe. Basically, it’s the sh*t.
Cooly G – ‘Up In My Head’
‘Phat Si’ is all together quite different – still staying true to G’s unique style, it’s harder, more erratic – this needs to be listened to through ear bleeding speakers or soul shaking headphones (my Dre’s are working a treat right now). Random bleeps, echos and trible drum licks make this something a you could happily drop in a rave environment. Bad.
Cooly G – ‘Phat Si’
So yea, turn the volume up, crank up the bass and wonder off.
Kelly Rowland is the latest singer to sit down with MTV and talk about life when they were 17. In this short clip she talks about wrecking a number of cars during this period in a life because she was a ‘terrible, terrible driver’. The full episode airs in the U.S tomorrow. We’ll post that soon as we can.
Stones Throw recording artist Aloe Blacc will return to London on October 19th performing at the legendary Jazz Cafe venue. Tickets are on sale now via the Jazz Cafe website and are priced at £15. I haven’t seen Blacc live yet, so definitely gonna check him out this time round.
Aloe’s new album, Good Times, is release via Stones Throw on September 28th.
Our homies over at moovmnt sat down with Bilal for an in-depth interview while he was in Amsterdam last month. He covers a lot of ground, so sit back and press play. Bilal’s new album Airtight’s Revenge is out next month – when that drops, your life will change. I’m serious.
