Christina Aguilera sits down with FUSE and speaks about her family life, motherhood, her husband and her past. She also talks about her new album and what/who influenced her new sound. X-Tina talks about her video for ‘Not Myself Tonight’ and Madonna’s influence on it. She talks about her critics, her collaboration with Nicki Minaj, charity work and her movie too.

I was talking to the homie Prophet about Christina Aguilera earlier today. We were talking about the ‘hard ride’ she’s had from, really, the beginning of her career. At first she was compared to Britney Spears (that’s tough lol), now Lady GaGa. We were saying that while she’s always been respected by critics for her immense voice, she’s never really been allowed to be ‘the star’. It’s sad, but true – she’s always been in the middle – never on the z-list, but never the megastar either.

It’s a shame, because she’s clearly more talented than most, but at the same time – I don’t feel she comes across very well.  She doesn’t really connect with people. Even in this interview, there’s something about her that just doesn’t come across as ‘warm’ to me. Not to mention, since her Stripped record (which was dope) she hasn’t really come with anything totally fresh. The new record, which I’ve tried to like, isn’t good. It definitely has it’s moments (don’t sleep on ‘WooHoo’), there are a few solid highlights, but generally I don’t find it very cohesive – it’s almost like she’s trying to be someone else – it doesn’t seem authentic. It really sounds like she’s jumping on Santogold’s wagon (in parts), some songs really remind me of her album. But Aguilera has a massive voice, a strong, powerful, soulful voice – her songs should reflect that. I don’t mean she should be over singing, but to me, the songs on the album are for the ‘average’ singers – not Christina. I’m going to carry on listening to it, maybe I’ll grow to like it.

Eh, just me. I still think she’s getting a really hard time with this project. It might not be great, but some of the things I’ve seen written and said about her is just cruel. And lets not forget, this chick has been in the game for over 10 years – before Rihanna, GaGa et el.

  1. All very true. You make a good point as does The Prophet. You guys have good opinions when it comes to music as well as the buisness side. keep it up, pinboard is dope.

You hit nails on them heads. I've been saying the same from DAY and have been rolling with a riot shield ever since *LOL*

Another problem with Christina at times is that she seems so hell bent on trying to be different and be 'that bitch' that it alienates her. Something she's not been able to shake since "Dirrty". Stripped is STILL an album to me. Front to back HOT! But Back to basics alienated everybody and was difficult to latch onto (even though I LOVED "Understand" and "Without you").

And now she's finally decided to do that album everybody wanted her to do back when and conform, but she's gone about it wrong. She's dropped an album that sounds like something she should have released in 2003. Full of outdated sounding joints that have her come up lesser than her peers as a result. Chrissy can say what she likes about Beyonce, Gaga and Britney: but their last albums were all better than Bionic in my opinion. "Diva" and "Video phone" sound like classics compared to some of the shit on Bionic. And Britney kicked Christina ass in the electronic stakes with Blackout. I mean, "Gimme more"… Britney classic right there for me. That shit is what "Not myself tonight" wishes it was! *lol*

I think a major part of what made me semi buy into Gaga was that she had a clear direction of the music she wanted to do and how she wanted to be put out there. Gaga locked down in a year what some take a decade to do: find their market and their niche. Christina's still finding that and it's causing her problems now.
