Here goes part 2 of B.o.B’s “Airplanes” featuring Eminem…

Download: B.o.B Feat Hayley Willians & Eminem – “Airplanes”

Em’s verse is hard, can’t be denied. I knew he’d sound good on this track. Still really like this track, but the more I hear it the more it sounds like something Lupe would drop. Or am I way off?

Peace, Love & B.o.B

I’m still not bored of hearing this song, or hearing Monica sing it. She sounds incredible on this track, it suits her perfectly. Monica’s new album Still Standing is out now, and comes recommended.

Oh my goodness…

Whether or not the following information came from Ryan Wakeman, WARPA, the Gaiming community or Janelle Monáe’s journals, Max Stellings and the Palace of the Dogs Archives is inconclusive at this time…What is known or agreed upon is that this information stems from an official entry on The ArchAndroid Crown in the Living Cyktionary, a 28th Century encyclopedia…

The ArchAndroid Crown: Designed by Zoman Ignatius, the half-elf, half-human mystic, reportedly 500 years ago. According to legend, the crown has several magic properties, as well as innovative technologies that can be employed only by The ArchAndroid. Zoman was a consummate inventor, artist and sculptor, a cross between Tesla and Da Vinci, and as such, he designed the crown to be a work of beauty that would embody the very spirit of Metropolis. According to legend, the crown features prominent Metropolis buildings and towers that will light up radiantly when the one and only true ArchAndroid wears the crown. According to the Daily Horos, this opulent headdress was stolen from the vaults in the Black House, reportedly by 1954, in October of 2715. Several members of 1954 were hunted down and executed for this crime. But the crown was never found. Many claim it has been secreted away to the Wonderground. There is also word that in the year 2010, several 1954 operatives have crafted a replica of this historic headdress to be worn by Janelle Monáe in anticipation for her album The ArchAndroid…no word on whether or not this replica has magic properties… The Living Cyktionary, 9th Edition, 2719

I actually have no other words, other than: oh my goodness. Cannot tell you how much I neeeeeeed this album. May 18th, soooon come! Oh, and if you haven’t already, check Janelle wearing that crown in the albums trailer.

Please, share your thoughts – what do you think about the album cover?

Peace, Love & Janelle Monae

I don’t make a habit of posting news of album releases, but sometimes you just need to support great music and get the word. This is one of those times. A real Hip Hop fan will know who Ty is and what he does – and if you don’t, just know – this guy is a legend. His new album Special Kind of Fool is released today – the album features the highly contagious single “Emotions” (which we posted a while back, along with it’s video), as well as collaborations with the likes of Sway, Vula & Terri Walker. I’m about to press play on this myself, but I’m not worried about recommending it to you – I know I’m not going to be disappointed, neither will you be.

Head over to iTunes now and purchase your copy.

Peace, Love & Ty

I’ve been very vocal about my disappointment of Kelis’ new music. I find it puzzling why so many people are jumping on “Acapella” when the track sucks…Hard. BUT I like to stay opened minded and always give an album a chance, so upon finding these two new tracks in my inbox, decided to give them a listen…

Download: Kelis – “22nd Century”“4th of July”

…I tried. I really did. But I’m sorry, as much as I am all for artist progression and growth, this is a million steps back from what Kelis does best. In no way am I saying these are two of the worse songs I’ve ever heard, but I do believe Kelis is way, way, way better than this. Her last album wasn’t great (except for “Bossy”, that was massive), and it looks like this album is set to share the same fate.

This euro-pop-dance mess is beyond over – I thought it died in the 90′s? - I’m just completely baffled as to why she has chosen this direction? Sometimes doing something just to be different is not the way forward. I understand since she’s been away a new wave of artists have come along who have clearly ‘borrowed’ from the likes of Kelis, but jumping on this type of music is not the right move. Sorry.

…And before you stans go mental, I’m not saying this won’t be successful, the chances are – it will be. But that’s what makes me wonder – for years Kelis has been producing forward thinking music, for a generation of open minded music nerds and has, I guess, struggled to be ‘mainstream’ – especially after her debut. So, is this an attempt to stay ‘relevant’ or to have a little of what the GaGa’s & Rihanna’s have? I don’t know and can’t say for certain – maybe this is just simply a change in artistic direction – but to me at least, it seems a little too…Suspect. Just my opinion!

Not going to be posting anything else on Kelis and this album (well, unless something really interesting happens). I will listen to the LP, give it a chance, but I don’t think it’s the type of thing that I’d be into. I don’t like posting stuff I don’t like, I don’t like being negative about music either, so yea – if you need your Kelis fix, I’m sure someone on the ol’ Blogroll will be able to help you out.

Peace, Love & Kelis

Sidenote: Just pressed play on Wanderland, album still sounds fresh as hell.

I have selfishly been keeping Jimetta Rose to myself for a good few months. I apologise. After you press play on this, you’re going to be angry with me. Why? Because she’s so freaking fly, that’s why. Jimetta’s debut album The Barber’s Daughter dropped in January, I discovered it around a month after and have been repeatedly listening to it ever since.

A good, ol’ fashioned dose of Soul is something we all love to hear, but when it’s delivered in such a fresh, contemporary and powerful way, that’s a different story – enter Los Angeles native Jimetta Rose. A name you may have heard on projects by Georgia Ann Muldrow and most recently Shafiq Husayn’s En’-A-Free-Ka.

Upon hearing the albums first song “Glory Us”, which sees Jimetta singing passionately to her love, in a way that reminds me of Jill Scott, captures perfectly, what you can expect from the rest of the LP. But before you even think this is just another ‘copy cat’ artist, let me stop you – this lady has her very own style, her very own stance. Any comparisons made to Scott or any other established and respected artist, need only be taken as the complement it was intended to be. Nothing more, nothing less.

Clearly inspired by the greats, The Barber’s Daughter, continues strong – influences from Africa, Jazz, the Blues, and Funk can be heard scattered around, all wrapped up in undiluted soul. Songs like “On My Own”, “I Got God” and “Revolution Out There”  (which she also rhymes on FYI) provide a groove I  have missed in Soul music.

Jimetta’s voice is so clear, so concise, so unquestionably soulful it captivates, quite literally. I often find myself having to re-listen to a certain line, or a certain ad-lib just to have it sink in. And don’t be mistaken, she’s not ‘just a singer’ either, she has something to say too. The album focuses heavily on love, all aspects of love. Rose opens her heart about being in love, giving love, being loved and wanting to be loved. She also covers some political ground on the empowering and provoking “America (Revisited)”. Meaningful lyrics gives this LP an even greater and fulfilling purpose.

The Barber’s Daughter is an album you will continue to listen to weeks, months, years after your first play. I firmly believe that.  It is due to artists like Jimetta and albums like this, that this year, I have such a rejuvenated view of Soul music. I am so excited to introduce you guys to this wonderful artist and only hope you enjoy her as much as I have/am.

Preview the entire album by pressing play on the bandcamp player above and then support it by purchasing it (for only $12!).

Peace, Love & Jimetta Rose
