I was meant to post this up a few days ago when Stones Throw sent it over, but some how it slipped through the net. Epic fail.

Anyways, Serato and Stones Throw have teamed up with the J Dilla estate for the official J Dilla Serato release, Donut Shop. “This is 2 discs with six J Dilla tracks, 2 sides with Serato Control Tone (for use with Serato Scratch Live DJ software), and 2 donut slipmats in a package designed by Studio No.1. This will be released May 10th (the day after Mother’s day–what’s up Ma Dukes?). Pre-order is available now…The Dilla tracks consist of three previously unreleased instrumentals selected by J.Rocc from the Dilla archives - “Safety Dane”, “Sycamore” and “Bars & Twists”, as well as three unreleased instrumental versions of Dilla’s production for Mos Def, Q-Tip & Busta Rhymes“.

Download: J Dilla – “Safety Dance”

Stones Throw have kindly offered Dilla’s mix of the 80′s hit “Safety Dance” as a free download. So, cop that and then head over to the Stones Throw site and pre-order yourself some dope Dilla vinyl. Lets make sure Jay stays paid.

“Always-N-Forever” is a bonus cut off Freeway & Jake One’s new album The Stimulus Package

A cool track, but nothing compared to what else can be found on the album. Understandably a bonus track, but with Freeway & Jake One – it’s never all that bad. Make sure you cop The Stimulus Package not only is it good Hip Hop, it comes with the coolest packaging.

“Follow Me” featuring U-N-I’s Thurzday, is the B-Side to “Best of Times” off In Search of Stoney Jackson…

Today must be good music Thursday. Damn. This is wicked. To be fair, the entire In Search of Stoney Jackson album is incredible, so it only makes sense that the B-Sides are too. Stones Throw continue to be one of the best Hip Hop labels around. Biggup. Oh yea, they also recently released an instrumental version of this album, head over to their site to check it out.

I’m always being asked: “What’s hot in London at the moment”. Well, this is. This is what’s hot in this city right now. Fatima and the Eglo family. ”Soul Glo” is that jam, right? That video gave me so much jokes. Good seeing so many friendly faces in there too. You would have previously heard Fatima’s soulful vocals on Safiq Husayn’s “Little Girl”.  ”Soul Glo” comes off Fatima’s new EP Mindtravelin, which you need to cop right now. Keep your eyes and ears firmly locked on this lady.

Brand spanking new video from Hudson Mohawke, who dropped one of the best albums of ’09 in the form of Butter, from which this track comes. Watch the fantastical, colour clash video and then, if you haven’t already – get that album. You need it in your life, especially a track called “FUSE”. Dear God. I kid you not – one of the biggest (and slept on) albums of last year. Still gets bumped on the regular.

We’ve been telling you about Ayah for long time now, ya’ll should be pretty familiar with what she does and how dope she is. I got mad excited when she announced she was working with DJ Jazzy Jeff for her new album – her voice is so soulful and her writing skills so on point, that I knew linking up with someone like Jazzy Jeff would compliment her perfectly.

…And I wasn’t wrong. You really, really need to hear this album! It’s so freaking good, like ‘replay that sh*t right now’ good! Ayah’s voice is sounding better than ever, DJ Jazzy Jeff has given her the perfect beats to sing over – it’s abundantly clear that these two work brilliantly together. A blend of Soul, Jazz, Blues, Hip Hop and Funk – Miss Ayah’s vocals soar.

Check out the three tracks I’ve uploaded, and then download the This Way sampler (above). If you love Soul music – this will not disappoint you. Tracklist after the jump.

Peace, Love & Ayah

Not long ago posted up the pictures, now check the video. Beyonce joins Alicia Keys on stage during her NYC Madison Sq Garden concert. Obviously not the best quality (esp when Bey comes on lol), but enjoyable nonetheless. Massive moment.

36 year old Japanese Hip Hop/Soul producer Nujabes has died in a fatal car accident, Hydeout Productions has confirmed. In a statement Shingo2, a close friend and colleague of the producers said:

We deeply regret the loss of a unique talent and a close friend. Through his soulful music, Nujabes has touched so many people around the world, even beyond his dreams. It continued to amaze me how young listeners of all backgrounds learned of his enigmatic name, and expressed support for his music,”

This is incredibly sad news. Nujabes was so talented, I’m constantly playing his beats. Made even more bitter considering his young age. This is well and truly a massive loss for music. If you’re not aware of what Nujabes created, I beg you do some research – his talent was remarkable. If you love Dilla, you’ll love his beats. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Update: I just read that Nujabes’ car accident happened on February 26th 2010 – the same day a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit the coast of Japan. His death was not made public until today when his company Hydeout Productions confirmed it. He was buried by his family in a private ceremony. Rest in Peace.

Peace & Love

It’s mad trippy, but I like it. I like hearing this side of Madlib too. These guys work well together – both mad scientists. New Amerykah, Part 2:  Return of the Ankh drops March 29th (UK). Read our review of the new album and hear what Badu had to say about it, it’s artwork and other things when speaking at the album playback yesterday that we attended.

Monica’s Still Standing album is on it’s way (March 23rd), “Mirror” is an newly leaked track of it…

Download: Monica – “Mirror”

I like this! I’m so happy that Monica is coming back hard – she’s finally putting out music that is not only quality (and not dated) but also reflects what she does best. This is hard knocking R&B joint, her voice sounds so strong. Like everything about this one. I was looking forward to the album after hearing “Everything To Me”, but now I’m really looking forward to it. Welcome back Monica!

I never do these ‘picture’ posts, but this is too much? Can you imagine, going to an Alicia Keys gig and her not only bring on Hov, but also Beyonce? Beyonce and Alicia Keys on the same stage? Performing together? Shut up. I love LDN, but this sh*t never happens (Ok, the odd surprise collabo does happen, but nothing on this scale). Jeeeeze! Great look.

…Now I need that “Put It In a Love Song” video.

Anyone who knows me personally or frequents this blog will know that I am, unequivocally an Erykah Badu fan. I’ve listened to her for years, I remember buying Baduizm in 1997 and my homies looking at me like I was smoking something green. For me, Badu’s debut has a permanent fixture in my ‘classic albums’ list. Her second album, Mama’s Gun, which many herald as her best to date, was released in 2000, followed by Worldwide Underground in 03 and then New Amerykah, Part 1: 4th World War in 2008.

Now, 2010 marks the release of her newest album New Amerykah, Part 2: Return of the Ankh – the PinBoard crew were among the lucky few who got the opportunity to hear the album (in full) and speak to the lady herself…

Erykah began by explaining that Part 1 was made by using the “left side of [her] brain” – The political, the logical, the analytical. While Part 2 expresses the right, more emotional, part of the brain. She also said that during the recording process of this album, she felt a lot like she did when making Baduizm, which is way she named it Return of the Ankh – as during the Baduizm phase she was reading and researching Kemet (Egypt) and the ‘Ankh’ was her favourite symbol. The symbol (word) meaning life.

Erykah Badu - "New Amerykah, Part 2: Return of the Ankh (PinBoardBlog.com)

Speaking on the album’s art work (which was blown up and stood behind Erykah as she spoke), Badu explained in quite some detail what exactly the image portrayed and the reasons behind it. Once again collaborating with artist Emek, she explained that ‘she’ (as the art no longer belongs to her (Erykah), it’s now the worlds), is cased in armour as a result of the experiences she has gone through: life, love, war, politics, struggle, bullshit. She explains that she is escaping through her head (“her self-cage”) – and is freeing herself from all the things she has experienced. She is being “re-born”. Badu also pointed out that around her armoured shoulders is the rubble from all the things on the Part 1 cover: money, record players, pollution, weapons and…”bullshit” etc. All this is happening under water too – notice the ripple above. Erykah passionately described the piece of art and said that to her, the cover art is just as important as the music it conceals. “I didn’t have TV growing up, I had album covers…I want my album cover to tell the story too”.

On to the music: New Amerykah, Part 2: Return of the Ankh is gorgeous. I do not think fans will be disapointed. Admittedly, I do need to listen to it more to fully digest what it’s all about, but all I can say is while listening to it – I felt good. Badu is back to singing those soulful melodies, ad-libbing in a way that really reminds me of her debut and Mama’s Gun (although she says she see’s/hears no comparisons) and talking about love, lust and everything in between that involves matters of the heart. Her beat selection was yet again on point. Having worked with the same produces as she did on Part 1 (don’t forget, ALL the songs from Part 1 & 2 were recorded during the same period) i.e. Madlib (“Umm Hmm”, “Strawberry Incense”) , Dilla (“Love”), Sa-Ra (“Agitation”), 9th Wonder (“20 Feet Tall”) and Kareem Riggins (“Get Money”, “Fall In Love”). I cannot stop thinking about “Love” produced by Dilla and “Umm Hmm” by Madlib. Those two tracks along with “Window Seat” are definitely the stand outs thus far. And I must admit, I’m surprised that Erykah dropped “Window Seat” so prematurely – it’s without a doubt one of the album’s strongest tracks, I really think she should have held that one back. If I heard that song, for the first time at yesterday’s playback, I would have jumped out of my seat. Truth.

Return of the Ankh is just that, a return. A return to the Badu that dropped Baduizm & Mama’s Gun. While this new LP sounds very little like the aforementioned, it does see a departure from Erykah’s experimental nature as heard on Worldwide Underground and New Amerykah, Part 1: 4th World War.

On speaking of her music, Erykah ended the session by saying: “If I was to die tomorrow, my kids would know exactly who I was by listening to my music”…

Update: Erykah Badu – “Strawberry Incense” (Listen)

Peace, Love & Erykah Badu

Attended the “SHANK” premiere last night in Brixton – I was very, very impressed. A good movie, compelling story (albeit it a little out of the ordinary) and an very talented cast. The cinematography is what impressed me the most, it was seamless and engaging, cutting edge and captivating. My eyes never drifted from the screen. Check the trailer after the jump.

A massive congratulations to director Mo Ali – “SHANK” being his first feature film – the guy rocked it out. The cast were, as I said, awesome – massive props to Bashy, his acting ability took me by surprise. Definitely something he should pursue more of, he’s a promising actor. Kedar Williams-Stirling delivered a strong and convincing breakout performance. Adam Deacon and the rest of the cast worked great together on screen – delivering a passionate, funny (at times), emotional and action packed performance. Bravo to them all.

Definitely recommend you check this movie out. UK stand up.

Peace, love & “SHANK”
