This dropped earlier today, but at first it was only available to watch in the U.S (and we don’t play those games here) and then, when it finally dropped, I was out working. Eh, we’re here now – have a look at Janelle’s brand new video for “Tightrope” featuring Big Boi.

…Love this track so much, it’s crazy. And this video is freakin’ awesome too, Janelle does not stop!  She’s pretty much blowing everyone out of the water right now and while many favour the show that is GaGa, I choose Monae any day (not that there’s any real comparison. I’ve been babbling on about how incredible she is live, this video only gives you a sneak peak into what she does on stage. The ArchAndroid drops May 19th – cannot wait.

And I love the fact that Janelle was one of our first ever features on PinBoard – pretty much two years ago. See, keep it locked right here and you’ll do good. Ha!

Can’t lie, I kinda cringed when I heard Badu was going to be on 106 & Park – but promo is promo and being a snob is not hot (so I will stop). “Not Myself Tonight” comes off Christina’s new album Bionic. This up-tempo banger is real hot, I’m really, really impressed! Christina has come back on point! Her vocals sound incredible (we wouldn’t expect anything less), I’m so thankful she didn’t continue down that euro-pop route she threatened not long ago. I like this.

Update: On further listen, I realise I actually like her vocals more than the track itself. Her voice sounds great. The beat isn’t the greatest but I don’t think I was really paying attention to that until now. It’s those damn ad-libs.

Erykah Badu sat down with the folks over at New York Magazine and talks about Lady GaGa, samples, Twitter and more. Check the interview out below…

You recorded some of the new record at Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios — is it fair to say your album cover feels a little Hendrix-inspired, too?

Because of the purple? That’s that haze, that funk color. That’s the official color of funk. Funk is purple and black.

You’ve become sort of a Twitter goddess.
I am [laughs]. It’s as if you’ve met angels that you can’t see or touch, but there’s a plethora of information and love and energy that you get from these things. I guess that’s what they mean when they talk about the Age of Aquarius, the Age of Technology. We’re witnessing evolution right now. Hey, I am an analog girl. And Twitter helped you get Paul McCartney to clear the Wings sample for “Gone Baby, Don’t Be Long” on the new disc.
I was amazed. I had nine hours to get a sample cleared. It was about 11 p.m. and I got busy. The first tweet was, “Looking for Paul McCartney, if I don’t get the sample cleared, then there’s no chance for the song to be on the album — go.” And after that, people just started tweeting and helping me. Nine a.m., I woke up and my attorney called and said, “Hey, some kind of way, this sample just got cleared.”

You sang on the Wu-Tang Clan’s “The Heart Gently Weeps,” which also sampled the Beatles. Do you have a special relationship to the band?
I do. Not only do I acknowledge it’s some of the greatest music that’s ever been written by some of the most creative and sonically pleasing voices, it’s part of my DNA — nostalgia, growing up listening to it. I can remember where I was or how something smelled every time I hear it.

How do you write your lyrics?
Music is what brings it out of me. I’ve never written lyrics without music — that would be poetry. It’s the music first, then I hum in a rhythmic, syncopated way. The next part is listening to it and decoding what I’m saying. It’s almost like a lump of clay and carving away at it, revealing what’s under it.

They call Mary J. Blige the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul and you the Queen of Neo-Soul. When you two perform on Lilith Fair this summer, will you have some sort of Queen-off?
Oh no. I’m only in competition with my last level and nobody can do it like Mary J. Blige. And I don’t consider myself the Queen of Neo-Soul. I don’t even know what neo-soul is. I’ll be the Queen of Neo-Funk, though. That thang. That’s what I want to be the queen of — that thang, with an “a” — that funk thang.

Were you in the studio with Lil Wayne when he recorded his part of “Jump Up in the Air (Stay There)”?
Of course. He is anointed with this gift. He listened to the song a couple of times, he went into the booth and said some things, and that was the song. And after I listened to it, it was brilliant, and when I listened a second, third time, it was even more brilliant.

What do you think about Lady Gaga? Like you, she connects images and music.
I think she’s a visual genius. She’s creative and fearless and beautiful and everything that an artist should be, visually. I don’t even know her music, but I am fulfilled by watching her evolve and create and fearlessly stun us over and over again. Whether I like the outfit or not, I am totally inspired to be me because she is totally herself. It’s infectious. I think after all, that’s all we are responsible for: be honest, be you — that’s our responsibility in life. Anything else is extra

It’s almost impossible to think that PinBoard has been going for 2 years now, but we can’t deny our age. It’s been a remarkable 2 years, one that has seen (without exaggeration) my life completely change. PinBoard has opened so many different doors for me personally, it’s difficult to fathom fully. Along the way I have met and had the privalge to work with some truly incredible people.

I can’t continue this without thanking the PinBoard Crew – Shan (Fantastic*nt) Phearon, Shernay Edwards, Zainab Jama, Parimal Makwana and the newest recruits S_H_E, Felicia Okoye & Ash ‘MusicIsRemedy’ Roye. Without a doubt the best and most talented crew one could hope for. 2010 is going to be ridiculous. We know this.

Massive thanks to all the artists, bloggers and music heads who I’ve got a chance to meet, get to know and work with too. Too many to list, but if we’ve shared, discussed, debated music – you’re included.

I’m not going to get too deep here, simply because the next couple weeks will speak for themselves. I was fully intending on having the NEW SITE go live today, but I decided it needed to wait  (I’m doing a Kanye). It wasn’t ready. It needs and will be perfect before you see it. This is my baby and it ain’t being birthed until’ it’s time. And thankfully, now, it is ready and beyond perfect. So, within the next few weeks PinBoard 2.0 will launch and with it and incredible array of exclusive projects. It kills me to not be able to divugle, but I promise you (PROMISE YOU!) it will all be worth the wait.

Most importantly though, thank you, thank you, thank you to all our readers for your continued support! It means the world to us that you chose to come here each and every day and support what we do. PinBoard has gone into something much more than I/we ever anticipated and as clique as it may sound, that’s all down to you. As we continue to expand, evolve and grow some more, we thank you.
