I love Queen Latifah, but this was not her best vocal showing. Damn. It looked (and sounded) like she was very nervous, which of course, is totally understandable – but yea, this rendition of “America, The Beautiful” was not hot. Sorry.

I actually think this version (produced by State of Emergency) is way better than the original (Produced by Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins). I was largely underwhelmed when I first heard this track, especially given the amount of hype that surrounded it. But I’m feelin’ this remix. Bey’s verse kills it.
The video should hit the nets on Wednesday.

Erykah Badu liberated the lyrics to her new single “Window Seat” because she kept hearing ‘interesting interpretations’. So, for those who have been enjoying the track (like I have), check the lyrics by clicking the imagine above to enlarge. “Window Seat” is released on February 19th, with New Amerykah Part 2: Return of the Ankh dropping on March 30th.
“Window Seat” is my new obsession – I kid you not. I cannot stop listening to it – I love Badu’s ability to switch things up and love her experimental/Hip Hop influences – but “Window Seat” reminds me so much of Baduizm and Mama’s Gun which is fly as hell.

I go to a lot of gigs – this, hands down, was one of my all time (ALL TIME!) favourites. There was something in the air that night at the Roundhouse. The fact that most of us waited an entire generation to get to witness the legend that is Q-Tip live. OR the fact that the Roundhouse was packed out with real Hip Hop heads (minus a few fakers). OR simply because the entire PinBoard crew were in attendance blissfully JAMMING in one corner. OR maybe due to the fact that Q-Tip jumped into the crowd, came to where we were, passed the mic to a homie (shouts to Pal Mal!) and jammed WITH us. Hahaha!
A perfect gig. Great memories.

Leona Lewis performed her latest single “I Got You” on the UK version of So You Think You Can Dance last night. As always, Lewis deliverers a flawless vocal – but yet again manages to bore the hell out of me. It’s unfortunately true. Vocals trump anyone else’s though.

Check out the BTS footage of Drake’s new Sprite commercial. This is a big look, for a rapper to get this type of endorsement so early on in his career – Drake is doing it big right now. The success he’s had, even before releasing an album, is phenomenal – I don’t think there’s been this much buzz about one rapper for a very long time.
The commercial itself aired in the US already, but the video out there is piss poor quality. The commercial looks dope – but for those who can’t wait for a HQ version, you can check it out after the jump.

A few days ago we reported that Jill Scott’s long-time record label Hidden Beach were suing her for breaching her contract. Now, the soul singer has defended herself and her decision to leave the label with the following statement:
“The lawsuit filed on February 3, 2010 by Hidden Beach Recordings against Jill Scott has no legal merit and misrepresents the history of Ms. Scott’s relationship with the label. Jill Scott has the legal right to terminate her recording contract with Hidden Beach Recordings under California’s 7-year rule, where she had been a recording artist for more than 10 years. During her time at Hidden Beach Recordings, she released several highly successful albums. At this time, with many creative projects in the works which include music, film and television roles and product development, Ms. Scott looks forward to continuing to further her artistry and building the Jill Scott brand in other creative environments.”
And there you have it. I wonder how this will all end? It’s a sad thing to happen, especially because she’s been on Hidden Beach for such a long time – but sometimes you need to do what you need to do. We don’t know the exact details/circumstances around this, so I will reserve judgement until we do. For now, as I have continually said, I really hope there’s not delay on that new album. I need new Jill Scott music in my life.
