Despite loving Leela’s voice, I have always felt her material (thus far at least) has never really matched her talents. I’m always left wanting a little more – this track is no exception. She’s clearly talented and having seen her live (a few years back when she opened for Common), I know she’s got the goods. Here’s to hoping her new album, from which track comes off, My Soul is a good’n.
As one of the biggest Prince fans you’ll find, I should be appalled by this – as Rihanna noticeably samples (or at least heavily borrows from) Prince’s “Controversy” – but to my surprise – I actually don’t hate it. I think it’s the Prince influence that I’m diggin ever so slightly.
Peace, Love & Rihanna

P.s I await the tomato throwing and abuse for not hating this lol!
This is pretty fly. Stussy have made a 3 part Dilla documentary series about his life in L.A. The above is part 1, part 2 (“Detroit to Los Angeles”) and part 3 (“Donuts”) will drop consecutively in the coming weeks – we’ll of course post them up when they do. Stussy is also releasing a limited edition tee and holding a bunch of ‘Dilla Day’ events – find out more over at stussy.com.
Incredibly sad news. It’s been reported that British fashion designer and icon Alexander McQueen has committed suicide…
British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead after taking his own life. The 40-year-old committed suicide just three years after his close friend, Isabella Blow – who plucked him from obscurity and helped him become a star – killed herself. A source at McQueen’s office this afternoon confirmed his death, saying: ‘It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.’ Read more.
We’re not a fashion blog, but we are fans of McQueen. My fashion friends (aka the homie Zayns) educated me on his greatness and ever since, I’ve been a fan from a far. This really is sad news. We don’t know anything else aside from the grim facts but it always makes you wonder, a person who so seemingly has everything – successful, wealthy, influential – living the dream, but yet still battling the demons we all do.
Update: Sky News reports McQueen’s mother died on February 3rd.
I’ve been rinsing this EP for about 3 weeks now, but have only now gotten round to featuring it. Released last month, The Basics is the latest project from producer Dunc (who’s previous work includes Diamond District’s In The Ruff) and emcee Toine (who you may have heard on “95 North” off Oddisee’s Oddisee 101 album). Together, these two go by the name of DTMD. This 6 track deep EP stays true to it’s title – in that it’s all about real Hip Hop, soulful-jazz infused beats and intelligent rhymes. This is really great music. I reckon you’ll think so too.

Here goes the full, official video for Rhi-Rhi’s new single “Rude Boy” – probably the biggest tune on her album. Check her out going back to her “Pon De Replay” vibe. She does look hot, very hot. But still ain’t feeling that Janelle Monae/fake Keith Haring look.
…I reckon folks will be hella confused when they see this. One minute she’s a sweet girl from the Islands. Next she’s a devil worshipping (not my words) edgy, rock chick. Now she’s running for Dancehall Queen. Ha. Hot regardless. Heavy still.
I’m feelin’ this! It’s kinda different to what he’s done before, but after a few listens – I quite dig it. Give it a few listens before you count it out.
Monica looks beautiful on the cover of her upcoming album Still Standing, which is released March 23rd. The video for the first single “Everything To Me” has been shot already and should be hitting the nets pretty soon. I love the track, it suits Monica’s vocals like a glove and just reminds me of why I fell in love with her all them years ago. For the first time, in a long time, I’m actually pretty excited about Monica’s new project.
It’s promo time and times have changed, but Sade on 106 & Park is just weird. Anyways, check Sade performing the first single and title track off her new album Solider of Love – which is out NOW!
Beyonce talks Grammy’s, guilty pleasures and a bunch of other things on the ‘Today Show’. Love how humble this lady continues to be. Check part 2 after the jump…
