I don’t really watch these artist reality TV shows, but I randomly strolled across Fantasia’s new show and actually kinda enjoyed it. I mean, it’s extremely typical i.e. very staged, but it shows a side to Fantasia I haven’t seen before. And while I’m not the biggest fan of her music thus far, the new single she’s toying with (which has blatantly already been selected as her first single, despite what the narrative is saying), sounds really good! Have a look-see.
Oh, and let it be known, I’m in no way committing to posting up every episode of this show (lol).

Marsha Ambrosius announces she’s now signed to Clive Davis’ record label…
Well, long story short, I AM SO EXCITED!!! Having a solid career as a song-writer/producer for so long had me in a very comfortable lane. It really wasn’t a decision made on my part to pursue a solo career, it was a blessing to be offered. My deal with Dr.Dre became a writing/production relationship with the Interscope building and I was cool with that.
Right now, I am so thankful to have a home at J Records, home of Alicia Keys, Jamie Foxx, Mario all of which I have had the pleasure of working with. J Records having an understanding with the direction of my sound and style has taken a great weight off my shoulders (literally lol – lost weight on weightwatchers HA!) and I am so comfortable and confident and happy to just be able to make music that I’m in love with again.
I have a tentative title for the album “Yours Sincerely… Marsha Ambrosius” which will be available some time this year (don’t know when for sure just yet) and I’m in the studio right now putting the icing on the cake. I treat my music like home cooked meals, it takes time, can’t just bung it in the microwave or order it to go in 5mins. I need to get all these flavors making sense together and have my listeners pressing play and letting it repeat over and over till you realize you listened to that song already
I’m making AN ALBUM!!! I can’t wait to share it with the world. I have Just Blaze, Dre & Vidal, Focus, myself and SPECIAL GUESTS TBA on MY album. Woohoo”
I really am praying for that album this year! Big congrats to Marsha on the deal, looking forward to the great music!

As I said last week, I’m down for anything Nosaj touches musically. These two tracks are no exception. The superdope producer puts his spin on Drake’s “Forever”, as well “Islands” by The XX. Both are awesome. Listen, download and enjoy.

Sure a few folk will have something to say about Rihanna’s choice of single artwork for her upcoming single “Rude Boy”. Naked and smoking a cigarette, ay?
…Bloody great song though.

Another Mariah Carey remix, this time it features R&B star Trey Songz…

Can someone please explain to me why they’re (the label/Mariah) are still trying to rescue this album? Why is this remix project even happening? Label’s are all about a return on their investment – so surely pumping a whole heap of (new) money into a project that wasn’t successful in the first place (based strictly on the fact that it was complete rubbish), is hardly good business? They need to learn, rubbish songs are rubbish songs. Doesn’t matter how many (younger) artists they have featuring on them, unless they’re totally rearranged/recorded – they’re.going.to.remain.rubbish.
CAN I GET AN AMEN!?

…And the good news keeps coming!
According to Pitchfork, the incredible Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are coming back with their 4th album on May 4th 2010. Entitled I Learned the Hard Way, the album will boast 12 brand new songs, no doubt packed to the brim with all their trademark soul and funk. Check the tracklist after the jump.
I saw these guys live at the Jazz Cafe back in 2008 and they blew me away. The Dap Kings are impeccable musicians and Sharon Jones has energy I could only dream of. An amazing group that many still sleep on. Get to know these guys if you love real soul music.

Great news for us Jill Scott fans…
Following up to 2007’s Grammy nominated Gold certified album The Real Thing, Jill is currently in the studio recording her 5th album titled The Light Of The Sun. The album embarks Jill on a flurry of emotional poetry as both her career and personal life have skyrocketed with success in Hollywood and birth of first child. The album is expected to be a Spring/Summer 2010 release, just in time for Scott’s return to the stage.
…Really love the title of that new album!
Scott also has a couple movies coming out in the new year including “Why Did I Get Married Too?”. As well as a few other projects like a Marvel Animation and BET Networks animated mini-series called “Black Panther”. Jill will voice “X-Men heroine Storm, alongside Golden Globe Nominated Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond), Kerry Washington (Last King of Scotland) and Golden Globe winning actress Alfre Woodard (American Violent).
All good stuff. Jill Scott is one of my favourite soul singers, so a new album is always good news for me. Through watching “The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” (which I didn’t think I’d like, but after watching one episode, really enjoyed) on the BBC, I also realised just how much of a good actress she is – so looking forward to all the other upcoming projects from her too.

Massive, massive love to Amelia for getting the confirmation on this.
People, people, people. The legend that is DOOM will be playing his first ever London gig on March 5th 2010 at the historic Roundhouse in Camden. I say get your ass in check and buy your tickets NOW – I just got mine. According to PMOI “his paper work has been processed, they [Roundhouse] are aware of past issues but as far as they are concerned he will be performing”.
Like I said, I just got my ticket and now I’m praying this actually happens. If it doesn’t, ah, I don’t even want to think about that. Lol!
Hip Hop heads all over – see you there.

Check 18 year old Karina Pasian covering Maxwell’s “Pretty Wings”. While she does have a great voice and can play really well, I can’t say I was blown away. But then covering this song isn’t easy. I thought she did a good job.

Download: Destiny’s Child – “Life Like This”
So good! Bey’s ol’ skool R&B riffs are killer. This is Destiny’s Child at their best – they continued to do great things but in my opinion, this ‘era’ was their finest. Pure R&B greatness. I miss this group!
