Apple finally announced their latest product – the iPad.
I was crazy excited about seeing this, but if I’m being 100% honest – it hasn’t impressed me as much as I thought it would. Don’t get me wrong I want one, but other than it being a new gadget – I’m not sure why? I have an iPhone and I have a MacBook (which pretty much goes every with me anyways) – why I’d need an iPad, I don’t know. Having said that…

A homie and I took our traditional weekly pilgrimage to the movies last night to check out “A Prophet”. A French film which details the prison ‘career’ of Malik El Djebana (Tahar Rahim), a 19 year old Arab man sentenced to 6 years. With no friends or family on the inside or out, Djenbana begins his sentence a loner. Things immediately change for him however when he is quickly (and forcibly) recruited by Kingpin Cear Luciani (Neils Arestrup) and begins a life of organised crime, chaos and political mayhem.
At a 155 minutes long, I can honestly say there’s not a single dull moment here. You find yourself on the edge of your seat as you become invested in the main character and his life decisions. It’s actually quite remarkable how much happens within those 155 minutes. “A Prophet” is sophisticated, insightful, intelligent and at times – quite brutal. But is all tied together brilliantly by the very human story running through it. A man torn between many paths – trying to do the best he can, with what he has.
This is a must see film. It comes highly recommended.

*Prepares to get abuse* I’ve never really been the biggest fan of Corinne Bailey Rae’s. A lot of people gasp when I say that, but it’s the truth. It’s undeniable how much a talent she is, not saying her music is bad – it’s just not something I’ve really gravitated towards. However, I did give her new album The Sea a go and actually really liked it. It’s a beautiful and mellow and I am enjoying it. The only criticism I can give it is that most of the songs seem to gel into one. But overall, I definitely like it.

Check out the trailer for Jill Scott’s latest (TV) movie called “Sins of a Mother”. The singer plays a recovering alcoholic, who is trying desperately to reconnect with her daughter after years of abuse and neglect.
Jill Scott has emerged as an extremely strong and talented actress. It’s really great to see how effortless her transition from music to films has been. The movie looks a little dry to me, but that’s just a preference thing, doesn’t take away from how great she seems in it.
“Sins of a Mother” airs in the US on February 21st on Lifetime.

This post actually started very differently. I was just finishing up a ‘Classic Moment’ post which featured Mariah’s “Sweetheart” video. By no means her most ‘classic’ song, but just something that I randomly started humming and thought to post. Anyways, at the end of the post, I wrote a ‘P.s’ which simply noted how great Mariah’s remixes used to be.
Remember: “Thank God I Found You” with Joe & Nas? Or “Heartbreaker” w/ Missy & Da Brat? “Fantasy” w/ ODB. and “The Roof” w/ Mobb Deep. Not to mention brilliant remixes of “My All (Stay Awhile)”, “I Still Believe (Pure Imagination)” w/ Bone Thugz & “Honey”, to name but a few. I then decided to post all the aforementioned remixes ‘after the jump’ and while I was doing so, realised that that was a post in itself.
So this ‘Classic Moment’ is dedicated to the Mariah Carey that used to drop hot remixes (of already pretty hot records). The Mariah Carey that used to collaborate intelligently. The Mariah Carey that produced well thought out reworkings and accompanying videos. And not the Mariah Carey that is currently trying to salvage an already piss-poor album by getting a bunch of ‘hot’ artists’ to add a verse or two.

You know what, it was during her ‘Hope For Haiti Now’ performance that I realised: I actually miss Christina Aguilera’s voice! So to hear some new music from her is, kinda cool. “Spotlight” could have quite easily been on her last album Back to Basics (which I thought kinda sucked), so I can’t say I’m blown away by this – but it’s a concept track – so I allow for that. What’s definitely true though is that voice is still very much there.
Christina’s new album Bionic drops April 2010. I hope she comes correct.
