This is why I love doing what I do.
I discovered this mixtape late last night (it dropped a couple weeks back) and quite literally haven’t stopped listening to it since. It’s been on repeat all day.
2tall, Kper & Clockwork have created a ridiculously epic mix in the shape of A Boom Bap Continuum, featuring some of the biggest and most important tracks in contemporary Hip Hop, the art of Hip Hop production and beat making is explored perfectly during this 1 hour, 20 minute tape. We’re talking Dilla, Quasimoto, Nosaj Thing, Pete Rock, Flying Lotus, Waajeed, Onra, Bullian, Hudson Mohawk, Exile, Little Dragon, Black Milk, Harmonic 313, Dam-Funk, Dorian Concept and TONS more!
The tape boasts over 250 tracks, featuring over 80 producers from 1999-2009.
This stuff drives me crazy – it’s so good. I’m trying to find the right words to explain how great it is, but I’m fully aware that nothing I can say will help illustrate how brilliant and intelligently put together it is. All I can do is feature it, urge you to download it (it’s totally free) and listen to it. Listen to it loudly, in your head phones, in your room, on road – just listen to it.
This is a journey from late 90s crate digging, to the circuit-bent soundscapes of the so called ‘post-dilla’ era. – 2tall
It’s a hat tip to all those who came before and who made mixes to be more than just a collection of tracks – they made it to tell a story, and that’s what we wanted to do. – Kper
I reckon I’ll be listening to this for a minute. I’m really thankful to have found this, big respect to 2tall, Kper & Clockwork for putting it together. It’s really reminded me how much I love Hip Hop. I know that sounds crazy, but as a blogger (and ultimately, a consumer) in 2009, I’m exposed to and have so much access to so much music, it’s really very easy to begin under-appreciating it all. It’s exceptionally easy to take a lot of it for granted and simply ‘move on to the next’. I really feel as though many of us are developing some type of ‘musical ADHD’ in that we’re unable to really focus on one thing for the time required to really appreciate it. No sooner one album drops, another one does and another and another. This is something I think everyone is susceptible to right now and for me, especially as a music lover, is definitely something I need to remember.
Tracks, mixtapes, EP’s, albums, mixes, remixes – everything drops in such quick succession – it’s essential we (myself included) remember to listen and absorb it all. Not saying it’s easy and actually, I think blogs have played a big role in the cause of this, all I’m saying is – instead of listening to everything quickly, take your time and digest it.
Again, want shouts to 2tall, Kper & Clockwork for A Boom Bap Continuum. You guys killed it. I really hope you lot enjoy this as much as I have.
Full tracklist after the jump.
Peace, Love & A Boom Bap Continuum.
