I can honesty say I’ve never, in my life, watched an episode of “Star Trek”. Of course I understood the pop culture significance and knew the general gist of the show, but other than this (common) knowledge – nada, nothing. But, I’m a big fan of action blockbusters and after watching a few trailers of the new “Star Trek” movie, I was super excited to go check it out. So excited in fact that I broke my normal (standard) rule of “only go cinema on Orange Wednesdays” (Buy-1-get-1-Free n’ all) and dug deep paying the stupid regular prices (which I really think Watchdog need to investigate!)
I didn’t know much about the story of the film, all I knew was: it was directed by J.J Abrams, had “Syler” in it as Spock and that sh*t was blowing up in space. Literally, that’s all I knew. I reckon that was part of the excitement – you know when you just know a film is gonna be massive?
If I’m being honest, I really cannot think of one thing I didn’t like about this movie. Not one single thing. The cast did great (their chemistry was awesome), the story was fast paced, engaging and interesting, the special effects were immaculate and the understated (and non-patronising) references to the original “Star Trek” series were both appreciated and tastefully done. Each character got enough ‘air time’ for the audience to really understand who they are and what their essentially about. The relationship between Kirk & Spock is of course, the main focus. Their on screen relationship was both intriguing and humorous. Infact, that’s an angle of the film I never expected – it was actually quite funny (clever funny at that).Chris Pine (Kirk) & Zachary Quinto (Spock) play their roles very convincingly.
As I sit here typing this out, I’m trying to constructively think of weaknesses – but I can’t think of any. It’s rare, but it’s true. I was never bored, never disengaged, never confused. I was entertained from the very first sequence (which was incredible may I add). The 2009 “Star Trek” movie is just superb. J.J Abrams created a brilliant adaptation of one of the TV’s most loved and famous series.
…I walked in not knowing f*ck all about “Star Trek” and walked out a bonafied Trekkie. I’m not sure if the die-hard fans will agree with me (probably not), but as a dude who loves big budget action adventure movies – I was sold. I could quite happily go back and see it again.
I have to give “Star Trek” a solid 9/10*
Peace, Love & “Star Trek”
