Q-Tip at the Roundhouse www.pinboardblog.com

If you use any of the following pictures online please credit www.pinboardblog.com

As we waited for the show to begin at the Roundhouse in Camden Town last night, the homie James asked “what’s been your favourite Hip Hop gig to date?”, after mentally deliberating for a second, some said The Roots, others Nas, I said Jay-Z last year.

…That answer, for us all, completely changed after Q-Tip left the stage.

Having not performed on these  shores for over 14 years, Q-Tip returned to LDN with full force. High energy, an electric atmosphere and the fact that the One we (Hip Hop lovers) look up to was right there, in front of us performing the soundtracks to our lives. My man was on point (Phife?). Q-Tip satisfied everyone with a solid set consisting of tracks from the new album The Renaissance including “We Fight/We Love”, “You”, “Move”, “Getting Up”, “Life is Better” – the latter resulting him ending up, literally, right in front of me/us AND moreover passing.the.mic.over.to.the.homie Pal Mal! W-H-A-T? LOL! One of the most surrealist moments I think I’ve ever experienced (another included Erykah Badu holding my hand while singing “Appletree” at Summerset House.). Q-Tip, in front of me? Singing “Life is Better”? Taking the piss bruvs! haha!

Q-Tip at the Roundhouse www.pinboardblog.com

Before that grand finale though, Q-Tip made everyone ecstatically happy by performing claaaaaasic A Tribe Called Quest material including “Bonita Applebum”, “Electric Relaxation”, “Scenario” and “Award Tour” to name but a few. Witnessing Q-Tip performing these songs, for me, is something I really didn’t think I’d get to experience. As I said at the top, 14 years it’s taken him to get over here, so when my dude jumps pon the speakers in front of us and performs “Award Tour” it was completely necessary for someone to slap me the fu*k up haha!

Q-Tip at the Roundhouse 2 www.pinboardblog.com

“Vibrant Thing” went down crazy too. The only track I was waiting for that didn’t come up was “Breathe and Stop” but honestly, in the grand scheme of things – who the heck cares? The Roundhouse was the perfect location for last night. It’s a stunning venue with amazing acoustics. I have eternal gratitude to Giles Peterson (super safe dude) for putting it all together. He explained during the intro that it’s taken him a “very long time” to make this happen. So, from US to you: Thank You Mr Peterson.

Q-Tip at the Roundhouse 4 www.pinboardblog.com

Q-Tip only spoke briefly throughout the gig and at one point had some words to share about the very last conversation he had with Jay Dee aka J Dilla. He explained how the late, great producer urged him, after he took a break from beat making to “study music”, to begin producing again. Yet another reason we should be thankful for Dilla, huh? R.I.P Dilla Dawg.

I could really go one for another 2000 words on how amazingly brilliant last night was, but I won’t. Oh, but before I do end, lemme just say: the official Q-Tip After party in deep, dark Shoreditch killed it. It was “so Shoreditch” (lmao those who know, know!), but it was a jam – cannot be denied. Then Q-Tip got on the decks lol that “jam” turned into a straight up rave – killed.it.again. Damn man!

Q-Tip at the Roundhouse www.pinboardblog.com

Easily the best Hip Hop gig I’ve ever attended and generally, one of the dopest nights I’ve had in London Town (that’s a big, but true statement). Respect to everyone who was there, was great to catch up with some ol’ peeps and meet those I’ve been chattin’ to on the Tinternets for a minute now! Sorry for those who I didn’t connect with, I was…’somewhere else’ lol!

Oh and also, big up to the other acts who were on before Q-Tip including Dorian Concept, Little Dragon, DJ Semtex (who suppled that ‘crack’ haha) and Benji B. Sorry for anyone I’ve forgotten.

Peace, Love & Q-Tip

The Pussycat Dolls go Bollywood with their latest track/video. The girls jump on A.R Rahman’s Oscar winning song “Jai Ho” from “Slumdog Millionaire” (I believe I’m the only remaining person in the world who has yet to see that movie?)…

Lil’ Wayne – “Prom Queen” [Piano Version by Russ Castella]

…Now, THIS I can f*cks with. I still don’t love it, but Lil’ Wayne with just a piano, I can live with that? I’m still not sold on this ‘rock’ sound. I prefer this and the other alternative version than the original. Am I alone? And is it just me or does this version sound very Kanye-ish too?

I recently had the opportunity to chop it up with my (good) friends at Good*Fella Radio, which broadcasts live every week on Tuesday nights from Rutgers University in NJ, 12mid-2am. In typical Good*Fella fashion, they’ve unleashed the video footage of my interview to the world today, and I would be remiss if I didn’t share it with you.

…Also, I teamed up with DJBooth.net to participate in their exclusive freestyle series; coming in at Week 17, I hopped on an instrumental from artist/producer 6th Sense and did what I do. – J.A.M.E.S Watts

I’ll let the press release do the work:

“THIS IS IT”

39,474 TICKETS PER HOUR

657 TICKETS PER MINUTE

THE HOTTEST TICKETS ON THE PLANET

SOLD OUT IN RECORD TIME

(London, March 13, 2009) – It is official – the hottest tickets on the planet, and the fastest selling tickets in London ever …..are completely sold out.

750,000 fans have bought tickets to see the undisputed King Of Pop live at the O2 Arena in days of frantic fan frenzy and saturated media coverage around the globe.

The amazing news of Michael Jackson’s return to the stage caused tickets to sell at an average rate of 40,000 an hour, over 650 tickets per minute – an astonishing 11 per second!

This morning, fans from as far a field as Japan, Belgium and Dubai queued to purchase their tickets. First in line was Ayesha Obi from Lewisham, in South East London. Holding her front row tickets, Ayesha, 19, started crying with emotion and excitement and said, “I queued for 2 whole days, it was well worth the wait. I am ecstatic!”

Chris Edmonds, Managing Director, Ticketmaster UK, said: “We often talk about unprecedented demand, but this week we have witnessed a live entertainment phenomenon. We have seen a truly amazing level of interest and demand for tickets from fans from across the world for the Michael Jackson shows at The O2 over the last 3 days. The success of the general on-sale today has led to Michael Jackson and AEG Live adding even more dates, taking the total amount of performances to 50. Today, we saw well over 250,000 fans hitting the Ticketmaster site at 7am for the general sale tickets. Whilst queues were long we were selling tickets at an exceptional rate. This was undoubtedly the busiest demand for tickets for an event which we have ever experienced.”

Three quarters of a million fans clearly feel the same way and their attention will now turn to the actual concerts, perhaps the most anticipated in history. Up there alongside Elvis Presley in Las Vegas, Michael Jackson is about to write a new chapter in entertainment folklore.

Randy Phillips, President & CEO of AEG Live, commented, “The last week has been the most astonishing I have seen in my career in the entertainment business.  I, for one, am counting the days, minutes and seconds until that first show.  I just cannot wait. ”

I witnessed facebook, twitter, text and phone call rage this morning with people cussssssing about not being able to get tickets for whatever reason. While I felt for them (you) all, I must admit, I was overly relieved I got my tickets via the pre-sale. Would have been livid otherwise. Anyways, that’s it – now we wait. July is only round the corner!

Peace, Love & Michael Jackson

I don’t know about you, but I have been waaaaaiting desperately to hear something new from Maxwell for too long now. Excited by every rumor, disappointed when it doesn’t transpire. Here, Maxwell speaks to you and me, the listener…

i know its been a long time. countless updates on various pages; false starts and empty promises. even i get frustrated with myself. why leave a world so encouraging and optimistic when so many people dream for the chances some of you may believe i might have squandered.

this isnt in response to anything or anyone in paticular. people are mercurial and my droplet is nothing compared to the oceans of you that see what you wish and perceive what you will.

again, i’m sure most of you are scratching your heads, confused with questions and concerns, but when it all surfaces and comes to fruition. i hope you can see that this journey was meant to happen as it did. i didn’t get it at first, but now, it all seems to be making sense. i guess candles have no power in the day and your many lights have been the leader leading me out from my bleak yet self induced darkness.

i’m not the best and i think even less of my contribution to music than my confidence sometimes betrays. there are hundreds i think of who rock it better than i do. some probably agree and i’m sure they will be all a buzz with details about why i suck.
regardless of that fact it’s just my nature and i guess my curse. i’m not fishing so please, no need for a pep talk. i just always think it, or i, can be better, but you know this already.

i urge you all to purchase prince’s new records. he is one of the last and baddest on the set. sade is on her way as well and trust me, it’s so monolithic it’ll shake you in your shoes!

pretty wings the video is set to be filmed.
the album, pre summer and the world tour.
this summer into the summer of 2010.
we’re going everywhere. details to follow.
thank you for waiting,

really.

Heavy stuff. He’s an artist. Crazy excited about the new video, new album and world tour! Maxwell is consistently played in my world and with each listen, I am continually amazed at how great his voice really is. Is there, for real, a better male vocalist than Maxwell?

Peace, Love & Maxwell

…Talk about blast from the past! Cleopatra? You takin’ the piss? I would be the phattest liar going if I said I didn’t buy this single (*cough* and album). I admit to the shame, but sh*t this was 10 years ago? How old am I feelin’ right now? We were all kids once haha!

The girls took part in one of those ‘makeover’ shows, which resulted in this final performance/reveal and I gotta say, they’re looking real good! Gone are the baggy dungarees and big t-shirts! Cleopatra are said to be about to make a big ‘comeback’ – not entirely how big of a comeback you can have after only releasing one album – but, eh, let’s see how that pans out.

Peace, Love & Cleopatra
