UNCF’s “An Evening of Stars – A Tribute to Patti LaBelle” aired last night in the US. We brought you a short clip of Fantasia and Jennifer Hudson performing on the show back in September when the show was filmed and now we can bring you some full performances from various artists including Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson and LeToya…

Fantasia – “Lady Marmalade”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDZRT8DRSSc&eurl=http://www.thatgrapejuice.net/&feature=player_embedded]

Fantasia – “Somebody Loves You, Baby”

Jennifer Hudson – “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leB-kbCH6QQ&eurl=http://www.thatgrapejuice.net/&feature=player_embedded]

LeToya – “When You Talk About Love”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwXz8rd67uA&eurl=http://www.thatgrapejuice.net/&feature=player_embedded]

Good Lord! Man. See, this is when you seperate your singers from your saaaaaangers! I know that type of style won’t be to every ones tastes and many will think that it’s all just a bunch of screaming, but boi, when you’re honoring Ms Patti LaBelle – you gotta bring that way.

All the performances were great, I was very surprised with LeToya’s. What Jennifer Hudson did at the end of that performance was simply breathe taking – I knew she had a dope voice, but didn’t know she got down like that. BUT Fantasia brought that place to it’s knees. Man, that voice is craaaaazy! Patti was lovin’ it - you know that ‘rollin-around-yellin’ is her trademark. Crazy soul singers man.

Peace, Love & Patti LaBelle

I’ll be damned! 09 seems to be the year the American emcee’s jump on the UK tunes! First Theophilus took hold of “Bongo Jam” and now Wale takes it somewhere else jumping on K.I.G’s maaaasssive club anthem “Head, Shoulders Knees & Toes”…

Wale – “Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes”

Glad Semtex and Wale sorted out their differences (lol). This is stupid though (in a good way of course). I’m feelin’ Wale’s version. For those outside the UK find the original video after the jump and just know that when this tune comes on in the clubs – errrrrrrryone goes bananas. It’s a bit crazy.

Peace, Love & Heads, Shoulders…

This is good, good news!

D’Angelo, musician we’ve all been waiting on is set to release a brand new album in 2009! The reluctant nu-soul star is not only planning an album, but also a worldwide spring tour beginning in Europe.

The album, reportedly titled James River is due this summer via J Records and will feature collaborations with Cee-Lo Green (Gnarls Barkley), Raphael Saadiq (previously confirmed during PinBoard’s exclusive interview), Mark Ronson and Roy Hargrove. But most tantalising of all is the rumoured collaboration between D’Angelo and Prince< The mind boggles.

It’s been 14 years since D’Angelo released his debut Brown Sugar and 9 years since his last record Voodoo. During this break the singer has battled personal demons, drug addiction, arrest, and endured a serious car accident. Making sporadic guest appearances on albums by Common, Q-Tip and J.Dilla along the way.

D’Angelo – “Brown Sugar”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iq_EfpGAH4o]

A new single “I Found My Smile Again” was released late last year and while only a reworking of an existing track, signified D’Angelo’s return to music and grabbed the attention of all those waiting.

In a statement, the singer’s manager, Lindsey Guin said: “He’s able to smile again and he’s ready to connect [with fans]…He’s coming back. And he looks great, by the way.”

I can’t tell you how happy I am to hear this. It’s been too long. I’m sure I can speak for most soul fans in saying: we’re in desperate need for some new D’Angelo. Not to mention, a Prince collaboration? And a tour? You kidding me! 2009 is set to be the year D’Angelo returns to form.

Told you this was very, very good news.

Peace, Love & D’Angelo.

“Prom Queen” is the first single taken from Lil’ Wayne’s rock album Rebirth

Lil’ Wayne – “Prom Queen” [tags]

I’ll be totally honest, I never “got” Lil’ Wayne as a rapper, so as a “rock star” it just really ain’t working for me. I’ll be real, the tune isn’t awful, but I ain’t feelin’ it at all. I’m sure there will be those who like it for the sake of liking it, but I ain’t one of them.

Oh and believe soon as the non-tagged version comes through, I’ll update this. Hate that sh*t.

Peace, Love & Lil’ Wayne
