Last Thursday a couple crew members attended the screening of the new Mike Tyson documentary entitled ”TYSON” in Soho.
In “TYSON” the former world champion looks back at his own life in and out of the ring with brutal honesty. His story is harsh, triumphant, incredible and sad. It’s shocking, but funny, scary but understandable.
From his earliest memories on the streets of Brooklyn, through to his entry into the boxing ring, James Toback’s film explores every aspect of Mike Tyson’s life. The eccentric boxer candidly speaks through his personal and professional hero’s, his career highs and lows, his fortunes (won and lost), his sudden rise to worldwide fame, his sexual escapades, marriages and legal woes (including the trial that placed him in prison for rape).
Mike Tyson: the boxer – achieved a career record of 50-6 with 44 wins by knockout. Mike Tyson: the man – has battled his entire life with personal demons dating back to his days as a gang kid. However, it’s during the film that it becomes clear that both aspects of his life are intertwined and directly correlated. Resulting in a very ‘human’ story that is both unexpected and insightful to learn.
“TYSON”, through original interviews, archival footage and photographs provides an in depth portrait of man whose legacy is as complex and contradictory as it is feared and legendary.
This documentary was brilliantly made. I was really amazed at how great of a film it was. I didn’t have many expectations going in, but I walked away with my thoughts provoked.
