This news isn’t surprising at all really. Don’t know how closely you guys have been following the Janet/Def Jam relationship (I know you crazy Janet fans know all about this)…

Janet Jackson has been released, by request, from her recording contract with Def Jam records. Rodney Jerkins confirmed and spoke about the news in his vlog for vibe.com explaining the situation…

Def Jam issued the following statement:

“At her request, the record label has agreed to dissolve their working relationship with the popular artist. Janet will have autonomy over her career, without the restrictions of a label system.”

It’s crazy because “Discipline” was not only a great Janet album, but it went #1. With the correct promotion (and financial backing) that album could have spawned a few more hits for sure. It’s a shame, but Janet knows what’s best and with her “Rock Witchu” tour receiving so much critical and commercial success, it doesn’t look like this is going to stop the superstar. Janet is dope. She’s next level and I’m praying that her tour comes over to the UK – we gotta see it!

Peace, Love & Janet Jackson

P.s A Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Darkchild team would be pretty fly for the next Janet album huh?
