Last night I dusted off some my old CD’s and converted them to lovely Mp3′s (I know, the sound quality isn’t as good, but it’s just so handy having errrrything in one place, easily accessible, ya know?). Amongst them was this album…

Tyrese’s debut album was, in my opinion, highly underrated and grossly overlooked. It’s a truly great R&B album. It has the right mix: hard hitting, 90′s R&B club tunes and those classic slow jams types. And it’s easy to forget these days, how much of a dope voice this man has. In recent years, he’s focused his attention on flexin his acting muscles, but lets not forget where it all started…

Remember that ad? Such a dope commercial. It was that commercial that got him a recording deal – which of course led him to his debut album the following year.
To be honest, anything after “Tyrese”, I’ve largely ignored. I did cop his sophomore album “2000 Watts” and was so overly unimpressed. *I was pissed, remember when CD’s were £15? And damn Our Price wouldn’t allow you to return them! Livid!* Then he dropped “I Wonna Go There” and after that “Alter Ego” non of which really did much for me. Twas a shame really coz after I copped this album, I assumed he would follow it up nicely. Pffft. How wrong.
In any case, “Tyrese” was dope as hell, tunes like “Nobody Else”, “Sweet Lady”, “Lately”, “You Get Yours”, “I Can’t Go On” and “Do You Need” [I could actually list every song] got me through a whole summer (98′ was a great year for R&B!). And can most certainly stand it’s own today. It’s a bad man album, for real!
I know many peeps don’t have it (I’ve asked so many people over the years, none of whom have owned it!), but I recommend you try hunt it down (google that sh*t) coz I think like most, you’ll be surprised at the quality embedded within it.
Tyrese worked it out on his debut, shame he never backed it up with anything else.
