Ray Protege Presents: ‘Hipster Hop’ Mixtape

“This ‘Hipster Hop’ mixtape is formulated to rid the world of the Hipster Rap Label by showcasing artists who are lumped in that category”

…That’s the message I was sent that accompanied this mixtape.

Ray Protege Presents: ‘Hipster Hop’ Mixtape

It’s a great compilation of what I think is an exciting, new wave of Hip Hop at the moment. I think a lot of the young guys and gals out there are super talented and are bringing something totally fresh to the game right now…I for one am enjoying it. Who cares what name it’s given?

After the jump: THE RANT

I find it so annoying that when ever a ‘new thing’ comes along, some annoying twat comes around with an annoying name for it, which often sticks and then the ones who came up with that very name (and the masses that follow) reject the ‘new thing’ because…it has a name! LOL.

…Pop culture gone amok, I say.

It’s SO boring (and not to mention confusing) when these gate keeping ‘cool kids’ dictate what’s “in” and what’s not. However, I do give the gate keepers credit, it’s the ones that follow, look up to and listen to them that I have the biggest problem with!

You remember in primary school, when on Monday, “X” would be the coolest thing and you’d submerge youself in it and then by the following week “X” would be so played out, anyone who didn’t get the memo would be the lamest person around? LOL! Don’t front, in primary, we were ALL the same.

…But nowadays, [in LDN] you see grown folks following each other like sheep. I ain’t saying “be original” because the truth is, there are too many people in this world for you to BE original. Sorry guys, but it’s true (yes, even you!). HOWEVER, at the very least, be yourself…Of course our lives are dictated by the mainstream,  our culture and our surroundings/environment and yes, some sociologists will argue that in fact “being yourself” is just an extended expression of the society you live in.

…But who gives a sh*t about that?? I’m just saying, if you want to wear what you were wearing 4 months ago, WEAR it! If you want to listen to a particular style of music that people (your peers/gate keepers) think is played out, sold out, wacked out or just ‘out’, LISTEN to it.

…In the words of one of my idols: “DO. YOU!”

You know? I hope you know? You know, right?

Although I do realise, the very nature of this rant can make me look like I’m just fronting and in a seemingly confusing paradox, appear to be the exact same thing that I’m actually ranting about. BOOOOI. This just got a whole lot confusing.

Read up, coz this post might get deleted! HA!

Peace, Love & Hipster Hop
