PinBoard has yet again joined forces with Wal-Mart Soundcheck to bring you - our good, good TinterNet family a chance to see exclusive, intimate and generally dope performances from some of our favourite musical acts around today.
…This time it’s with the (gentle)man of the moment:
Ne-Yo
When Ne-Yo first came out with “So Sick”, I wasn’t really that interested [how rinsed was that tune?]. But when he dropped “Because of You” on his second album and more recently “Closer” on his up-coming album, I’ve become a lot more interested in this dude. Aside from this, I believe [my personal opinion] that this man is 00′s equivalent of Babyface - remember when every big R&B tune was written by Babyface? Ne-Yo is writing HITS for ERRRRRYONE these days! He deserves mad respect for that, if not for his solo work.
Anyways, this ‘episode’ of Soundcheck is dope. Seriously! Yea, when he performs you can see the MJ inspiration and (when he introduces the ‘brass section’ during “Because of You”) you can definitely see the Prince inspiration, but hey – isn’t it all about taking from the legends and blending it with something new? Micheal did it with James Brown and Prince did it with Jimmy Hendrix? Ne-Yo def brings it with his live performance here and sings his ass off in the process!
The sit down interview is pretty fly too. He talks about the new album ["The Year of the Gentleman"], the inspiration behind the title/sound and how he found musical influences from his stay in London [LDN Stand up! We keep saying it, but this city is the place to be right now!].
