PinBoard Exclusive: The Game – "L.A.X" Album Playback2
Posted In Uncategorized by Speeakz
So the PinBoard Crew rolled down to the Polydor Records HQ for the playback of The Game’s new up-coming album “L.A.X”. We were quickly informed on arrival that we weren’t gonna listen to the full album, but instead hear 5 tracks from it. We were a bit disapointed but hey, s*** happens?
We’re not gonna eleborate on each track too tough because it’s pretty hard to get a good image of an album from only hearing 5 tracks once…but we’ll give you the round up.
“Make The World Go Around Feat Chris Brown” [Produced by Cool & Dre]
The introduction and beat on this joint was dope. We thought we were gonna dig it, but then we heard Chris Brown’s lil R&B/Pop hook and kinda went off it. [Chris Brown on The Game's track kinda reminded us of our lil' brother/cousin trying to act gansta!]. We have no doubt that if this track was ever released, it’d probably do great things on Radio/TV, but it wasn’t rocking our boat too at all. If it wasn’t for The Game’s delivery, it would have been a complete mess. Lyrically it wasn’t the most challenging (he raps about money a lot!) but Cool & Dre’s production was flawless.
We give it: 2/5
“I Ain’t Fucking With You“ [Produced by Trackmasters]
Pretty much the same as above. Intro killed it. The beat was seductive, production flawless but..nothing else. I mean, it was “aiight” but who wants “aiight”? We wanted to get excited, instead we were confronted with a straight forward, lackluster Hip Hop track.
The subject matter was pretty jokes though. The Game spits about how he’s tired of his girlfriend pissing him off and doesn’t care “if you’re looking like Beyonce, I ain’t fucking you” LOL. You know that point in your relationship (fella’s), when your chick has stopped being cool, sweet and innocent and has just become annoying? Yea, that’s what “I Ain’t Fucking With You” is on. LOL. He does say some funny stuff, but that’s about all we got – a few laughs.
We give it: 3/5
“Dope Boys” [Produced by 1500 or Nothin']
This tune was big. The beat more than the subject matter. The hard hitting drone of the drums made your head invulentarily bop. You kinda felt this one. We didn’t actually right much about this jam. Dunno why, maybe we were enjoying it a bit too much. In any case, it was pretty fly.
We give it: 3.5/5
“Money Car” [Produced by Cool & Dre]
This is where things began to turn around! This was our favourite track of the playback. “Money Car” did it’s thing. This was the joint we were waiting for. This was what wanted! The track not only delivers with a disgustingly dope beat, but also provides lyrically too. The deep, dark and often kinda weird lyrics fitted in perfectly with Cool & Dre’s production. This was the jam that got us excited, got our eyes twinkling and got our brains thinking…and this was The Game we were waiting for to arrive! BIG TUNE.
We give it: 5/5
“My Life“ Feat Lil’ Wayne [Produced by Cool & Dre]
Most likely to be his second single, this joint was also pretty impressive. It was definitely one of the better tracks we heard and will most likely work as a single. Now, all you PinBoard readers will know, we ain’t fans of Weezy, but we must say, the man definitely adds something special to this track [vocoder and all!]. After a little audio skit of someone breaking into a house and shooting it’s occupant [nice!], Lil’ Wayne ‘sings’ the introduction, asking God “why you ain’t taken me?” [again, nice!].
The dark, intrusive beat is driven by a sobering piano, and when The Game comes in, that’s it. He kills it. “Like I needed my father, but he needed his needles”, The Game spits autobiographically on his life growing up, surrounded by drugs, abuse, struggle and death, he implores “we are not the same, I’m a martian”. The track brilliantly allows you a glimps into his state of mind, without sounding foney or…moany! We were really impressed with this collabo. Dope track for sure! My end notes say: “The outro was DOPE!” – so, take that as you will! LOL!
We give it: 4/5
In Conclusion…
We’re still pretty excited about hearing “L.A.X”. Like we said, it’s hard to get a full picture of an album from just 5 tracks, so we ain’t gonna pass judgement yet. We were told that there will be a few surprises in the mix (production/collabo wise). It was confirmed that The Game and Marsha Ambrosius (Floetry) had collaborated on one joint that will be appearing on the LP.
Even on the tracks we weren’t exactly feeling, The Game manages to provoke thoughts, twist words, create interesting metaphors and play with his own ideas brilliantly. And yea, his name dropping can get a bit tired, but again, he does it so brilliantly and uses it so intelligently – you kinda ‘allow him’. The most impressive thing we found on the 5 tracks we heard was the amazing production. Cool & Dre, Trackmasters and 1500 or Nothin’ delivered 100%.
It’s often overlooked that That Game is a huge player in Hip Hop, especially over here. For a rap artist to sell in excess of 600,000 copies of their album in England is a HUGE achievement and shouldn’t be taken lightly. His performance and skills on tracks are undeniable and at the end of the day “Love it or Hate it”, he does produce quality Hip Hop.
For that, The Game will always have our respect and our support…!
At the moment, The Game is on tour in the U.S with Lil’ Wayne and is of course putting the finishing touches to “L.A.X”. He intends to come over to London at end of July and wants to tour the UK at some point this year too – apparently he likes it over here?!
Peace, Love & The Game
