Anthony David

I’ve recently educated myself on Anthony David and my God, what have I been missing? I was introduced to him when I saw the video for “Words” featuring India.Arie and was intrigued to find out more about this dude whom I had never heard of…! *I can hear the ‘grasps’ from those of you who have long known about this man, but hey, it happens to the best of us right?*. If I had to describe Anthony David to you, I would have to cite Bill Withers, Donny Hathaway, Anthony Hamilton, Mos Def, Musiq, Common and Curis Mayfield and even that wouldn’t do him justice! He’s perfected his own sound.
Born and raised in Georgia, Anthony David found his musical hub in Atlanta, “I had been looking all over the world for the right vibe to cultivate my song writing…I found it here in Atlanta’s music and spoken word scene. Atlanta is where my talent and passion grew together. I was able to find artists who connected with me. That had that same passion to create.”
It was while in Atlanta, Anthony sparked up an inspiring friendship with a certain Grammy nominated artist…India.Arie. “India (.Arie) was the first person I saw when I got out of the car from Savannah,” says David ,“I thought she was cool and we were both doing our music and enjoying the scene that Atlanta gives an artist. There was never a time that we didn’t hang out”. Anthony went on to write “A Part Of My Life” for Arie, which ended up on the 7x Grammy nominated album “Strength, Courage & Wisdom” and has also contributed to many other songs that have appeared on her subsequent albums.
David has already released two solo albums (independently), both of which received high critical acclaim, most noticeably in his native Georgia. “Three Chords & The Truth” and “Red Clay Chronicles” earned him nationwide fans and a spot on board both Aries’ and Kems’ tour. He also headlined his own tour throughout Europe and Japan. “While traveling around the country and Europe playing, I was able to soak up sounds from everywhere I went. I’ve just been able to grow and expand my sound”. That sound David speaks of is what he refers to as “Millennium Blues”, because it “all goes back to the blues. The lyrics, the music, my using everything from acoustic to hip-hop, the story telling…all of it connects through the blues like a bridge.”
Now, Anthony David is about to release his third album “Acey Deucy”. It is the combination of songs from both his previous albums that make this project. “Anthony David’s “Acey Deucy ” is a project focused on real life experience but original and passionate in presentation…[It] is a blueprint for how to create great
music in different styles, while not being diverse just for the sake of being different”. Amen.
If like me, you were unaware of this man before reading this, you have to get on board - like, now! His voice, his lyrics and his musicianship are extraordinary. It’s very rare to hear an artist with the same ethos of soul artists from the 60′s and 70′s, who perfectly incorporate contemporary issues, situations and problems like Anthony David does. India.Arie once said that she loved Anthony’s music because of the way “he speaks from a man’s emotional perspective in relationships and his views on learning about life as a young man of the hip hop generation” – I couldn’t agree more. His songs speak honestly, candidly and whole heartily about everything ranging from relationships, cheating, family, heartaches, love, life and loss.
If you love your soul music raw and real then I promise you, you will love Anthony David. I haven’t stopped listening to his albums! You need them in your life and make sure you cop them legally! *It’s all about supporting these kinds of artists people!*.
